Regular Homework Assignments for Mrs. Brown's Second Grade Class ('09-'10)
We have four regular homework assignments in our class.
Wednesdays: 1)Hand in spelling homework
Thursdays: 2) & 3)Hand in Reading/Math Logs
Fridays: 4) Hand in Decodable note and plastic book bag
Reading Logs are weekly homework assignments. We become better readers
by reading. Students are strongly encouraged to read regularly for
enjoyment and learning in their free time at home. The homework requirement
for Reading Logs is that each student should read at least 75 minutes per
week (more is always better). The reading selections can be their choice:
library books, favorite titles from home, or the decodables that are sent
home on Thursdays. Students can read to their parents or read to
themselves.
The Math Log is on the back of the Reading Log. It is due on
Thursdays. Parents will need to work with their child about five (5)
minutes a night to practice quick recall of basic math facts. Please work a
minimum of 20 minutes a week with your child. It will make a difference. I
have links to "addition and subtraction strategies" on my Teacher Page to
aid parents in tackling the task of supporting their child's learning of the
math facts. The "Fast Facts" that we are working on are on my Announcement
page.
The "Decodable" note will come home with the weekly reading assignment.
The "decodables" are being sent home for students to keep for fluency
practice. They are books that should be easy for students to read so they
can work on speed, smoothness, decoding skills, and expression. The fluency
goal for the end of second grade is 90 wpm.
