| Dear Parents,
Welcome to 3rd grade. I am looking forward to a fun and exciting
year. This is my fourth year teaching 3rd grade at Richland Elementary and
I have a lot of new and fresh ideas for this coming school year.
One of our main focuses in 3rd grade is math. We perfect our
addition and subtraction skills and become experts before moving on to
multiplication and division after the Holiday Break. We also have units on
reading graphs, telling time, rounding, and measurement. We work all year
long on problem solving skills.
Our reading series has a variety of literature in several units. We
will start with a theme of Friendship and move to our other themes of City
Life, Imagination, and Money. We also have short readables that students
will read both at school and at home to help improve their fluency. There
are centers associated with each lesson which the students will be working
on as well. In third grade, we focus on reading fluency and reading
comprehension.
We are in a transition year for science as we move to a new set of
Content Expectations from the State. This year we will be working with
plants, geology, and force and motion. There are going to be some things
that are new to 3rd grade, and others that we have done before. They will
all be taught through fun, hands on activities and I am very excited about
Science.
In Social Studies we study the United States by region. The states
are grouped in such a way that we can learn characteristics about each
region as well as facts about each state. We also work on map skills
including the map legend, characteristics of the map, map scale, and compass
rose.
As parents, please feel free to ask me questions or voice
concerns anytime about what is going on in the classroom. You can either
call the school at 488-5080 ext. 3129 and leave me a message or you can e-
mail me at penglish@gulllakecs.org. I check my e-mail often during school,
after school, and even on the weekends. You can also check out the
classroom webpage by going to Teacherweb.com and following the “Find Your
Teacher” link. I hope to work with the webpage often, so check back for
updates weekly.
Again, I am looking forward to having all these wonderful children
this year. I hope to make it a great year.
