Fascinating! 8th Grade Social Studies will cover from the Civil War through World War II to the present. As you can see, this is an incredible amount of history to cover in one year! So hold on to your textbooks, grab a pencil or pen, and let's make that mouse zip across several decades of GREAT American history! Get a brief overview in a video web site at: http://www.animatedatlas.com/movie2.html So what is this United States of America all about? What is so amazing about our democratic governement? What makes our Constitution and Bill of Rights so fascinating? Read below. Then compare what we have here in the U.S.A. with what many, many other countries DO NOT have. We take our freedoms for granted. Yet thousands and thousands have died to protect our freedoms. Why? Core Democratic ValuesThis section is divided into two parts the Fundamental Beliefs (Often referred to as the Core Democratic Values of Elementary Students.) and the Constitutional Principals. Fundamental BeliefsLife: A person's right to life can't be violated except if your life or the lives of others is threatened. Liberty: This includes personal freedom, political freedom, and economic freedom. This is the freedom for people to gather in groups. They have their own beliefs, ideas and opinions. People also have the right to express their opinions in public.
The Pursuit of Happiness: As long as you don't interfere with others you have the right to seek happiness in your own way. Common Good: Working together for the welfare of the community or the benefit of all. Justice: All people should be treated fairly in both the benefits and the obligations of society. No individual or group should be favored over another person or group. Equality: Everyone has the right to Political, Legal, Social and Economic Equality. Everyone has the right to the same treatment regardless of race, sex, religion, heritage, or economic status. Diversity: The differences in culture, dress, language, heritage and religion are not just tolerated, but celebrated as a strength. Truth: They should expect and demand that the government not lie to them and the government should disclose information to the people. The government and its people should not lie. Popular Sovereignty: The power of the government comes from the people. The people are the ultimate authority over the government. Patriotism: The people or citizens show a love and devotion for their country and the values. They can show this by words or by actions. Constitutional PrinciplesRule of Law: Both the people and the government must obey all laws. Separation of Powers: The executive, legislative and judicial branches of the government should be separate institutions so no one branch has all of the power. Representative Government: People have the right to elect others to represent them in the government. Checks and Balances: The powers of the three branches of government, executive, legislative and judicial, should be balanced. No one branch should be dominate. Each branch should have powers to check the actions of the other branches. Individual Rights: Each individual has the fundamental right to life, liberty, economic freedom and the pursuit of happiness. These rights are outlined in the Bill of Rights and the government should protect these rights and not place undo restrictions upon them. Freedom of Religion: The right to practice any or no religion without persecution by the government. Federalism: The states and the federal government share power as outlined by the Constitution. Civilian Control of the Military: The people control the military to preserve democracy. As with any Internet exploration - proceed WITH CAUTION! While most academic web sites are rich with informational content, malicious individuals can link to a web site unknowing to the webmasters. It's like crossing the street, you look both ways but it is impossible to know every driver - but that doesn't stop us from crossing the street! Explore and learn! Enrich your mind! This schedule is APPROXIMATE and will change due to weather, student understanding, and unexpected events. While we may not correct each section immediately, students need to have the pages complete on the due dates. Working ahead when time permits is soooo helpful. I try to give in class time as it becomes available. We have many interruptions and unplanned events and must be flexible. When we use them, the new study guides ask questions that guide students to focus on important information and help them review pieces from previous sections. There will be semester exams. Use the study guides and highlighted chapter packets as study guides for the semester exams. DUE DATE: Monday, January 11, 2010 (7 weeks to complete project) Part A [60 points] - Create a news broadcast of an important event that took place during or in regards to the Civil War. Use actual events. (ideas: battles, elections, new scientific discoveries, a major accomplishment of an important individual, political battles, civil rights issues, extraordinary living conditions, economic concerns) Length: 2.5 minutes minimum Include the following in your news cast: (Use this to help demonstrate/explain your topic – do not simply “show” it on the video!) ~ 1 map indicating where this event took place or the area most affected by the event. ~ 1 photo or drawing of a key person or groups of people involved. ~ 1 chart (graph, chart of information, spreadsheet of data, timeline) that helps viewers better understand your event. ~ You as the “professional” broadcaster reporting about this event. Goal: To explain an important event and its impact on the Civil War. You need to identify the who, what, where, when, and why (how). News is factual, not opinionated. Do not sensationalize the event, report about the event. News involves factual research report writing. It may include causes and effects, resulting national concerns at the point in time your event took place, and/or ‘newsbites’ (comments) from qualified sources. You will turn in a typed copy of the script you read for the newscast with a “Resources” page listing your sources of information, along with the recorded news cast and commercial. Part B [40 points] - Create a commercial for a product or service that was available during the Civil War era. Use actual products. Length: 30 seconds minimum Include the following in your commercial: - a picture or drawing of your product - explanation of the product - explanation of the benefits of this product to potential buyers - you talking about the product Goal: Commercials require persuasive writing explaining reasons a buyer wants to buy your product. Often this type of writing includes emotional appeals to a consumer’s desires to “improve” upon some aspect. You will turn in a typed copy of the script read for the commercial with a “Resources” page listing your sources of information, along with the recorded news cast and commercial. Part C [Cooperation] - You may work with another individual to video tape each other and help with ideas, but you are completely responsible for your news cast and commercial. The people you work with may be used as “extra’s” but you are the main speaker. Written Format Details: Use this page as a checklist to make sure you are following directions! Newscast ___ The first page has the typical class heading in the upper right corner including first & last name, student number, subject, and due date. See example: John Smith 808 Social Studies Newscast: Your Topic Nov. 2, 2019 ___ 12, 13, or 14 point font SIZE ___ Times New Roman, Helvetica, Garamond or Arial font STYLE ___ Double line spacing ___ 1 inch margins top, bottom, both sides ___ Page numbering includes student last name followed by page number as a footer in the lower right corner of each page. See example: Smith 2 ___ A single staple in the upper left corner. Commercial - same format except heading subject: John Smith 808 Social Studies Commercial: Your Product Nov. 2, 2019 Video Format: If you do not have access to video recording equipment, you may use my equipment - at school. You may schedule time to come in before school, during recess, or make special arrangements. I am happy to help, but my equipment can only be used under my supervision. If you have access to DVD burning equipment, please bring in a DVD of your project. A VHS video tape also works well. We have a DVD player and a VHS player in other classrooms. We will conclude with a class viewing of the Civil War News brought to you by the HT professionals! Resources Please group types of resources together such as books in one group, web sites in another group. Where an individual’s name is listed as the author, list that resource in alphabetical order by last name. Then state the title of the book/article, underlined or italicized. The publisher and copyright date should follow. Web sites are often arranged in alphabetical order by author of article you used or by full name of organization sponsoring the web site. See examples below. Book: Spinelli, Jerry, Maniac Magee, Little, Brown and Company, 1990. Magazine Article: Zullo, Allen, “Survivors”, Time Magazine, January 15, 2010. Web Site: Constitutional Rights Foundation http://www.crf-usa.org/election_central/platforms_planks.htm accessed on December 3, 2010. Personal Interview: Smith, John, personal interview on the subject of township politics on December 3, 2004. The main concern with resources is giving credit to the hard work of the authors and organizations, and enabling others interested in your topic to find the information for further learning.
