Independent Reading Book chosen by Monday 9/21/09 please.

First Quarter 6th Grade Independent Reading Projects are due:

Monday, Oct. 26, 2009

First quarter Independent Reading Project: Sixth grade students will write a brief review of their chosen book. The audience for this review is other middle school students at our school. The purpose of the review is to reveal just enough information about the book to interest other middle school readers without giving away the whole story. Also included in the review will be a fascinating quote from the book. This quote can be a piece of interesting dialogue, an especially well written description, or a terrific example of a literary element such as alliteration, simile, or metaphor. Your chosen quote could just be a really exciting moment in the story that really grabs the reader's attention. Sixth grade students need to include the name of the main character and the most often used setting in their review. Think carefully, choose wisely, and write with excitement! Your review should be no longer than about half of a page, typed, double spaced, 12 point font. Think concise and powerful writing! Bring your rough draft to class on Tuesday, October 20, 2009 so we can help classmates refine their writing.

Second Quarter

6th Grade 2nd Quarter Independent Reading

Independent Reading books can go with you to every class.

Read when you have a minute or two of waiting!

Read when you are finished with a test!

Read for the FUN of it!

Students are asked to read a book from the Accelerated Reader list of books. Using the Accelerated Reader Bookfinder, please tell Mrs. Sochacki the title and author of the book you chose from the list. You must have this filled in by _Friday, November 21_. Most of the Holy Trinity School library books are on the Accelerated Reader list. Also, you can use the Kent District Library to check out a book. Go to KDL.org to find one of the titles.

When finished reading the book, you will complete the Accelerated Reader online Quiz. The quiz needs to be completed by Friday, January 8, 2010. When you finish reading your book, take the quiz at the beginning of computer class. Mrs. Whitson will allow students to take their Accelerated Book quizzes at the beginning of computer class. You make not take the quizzes at home. You may not use the book for the quiz. Please enjoy reading your book, talk about your book with friends, and take your online quiz thoughtfully. Please take your time to answer the questions on your quiz carefully. Your "log in" for taking your quiz is the same you use to check your grades online. Mrs. Sochacki and Mrs. Whitson have copies of the directions for taking the quizzes. Just ask when you are ready. Always happy to help!

Genre: you pick! Try something NEW! Make Reading Your GOAL!

Directions page handed out to students on Jan 2009.

6th Grade Literature – Independent Reading Project – Third Quarter

Pick ONE of the following projects to create, display, and explain to your classmates. For the third quarter you may choose your own book. Please choose your project and tell Mrs. Sochacki which project you are planning on completing. You will be given in-class time to begin working on this project. Lined paper and construction paper are available in the classroom.

Use your imagination! Be creative! Have FUN!

You are responsible for completing this project by the due date!

#1 Cartoon - Summarize the plot by creating a cartoon version of the novel. Use about six to eight frames of white on construction paper. Write a paragraph explaining each frame. You can use a few pieces of construction paper and staple them together. Be prepared to explain your project to the class.

#2 Setting Change - Move the setting of the story by changing the time and the place. What would the novel be like now? Draw six to eight scenes from the story in the new setting. Write about how the story would change and stay the same for each scene that you draw. Also write about how the main character would behave differently and how he/she would behave differently.

#3 Newspaper Interview - Pretend you are a newspaper reporter whose job is to interview one of the characters. In writing, explain why you chose to interview this character. Write your interview being careful to label who is speaking each time. Ask at least seven questions and give more than simple answers. Final interview needs to be typed or very neatly handwritten.

#4 Poetry - Write a poem about one of the novels. Include something about the characters, setting, plot, and theme. Type or very neatly handwrite your poetry. Illustrate important elements of your poetry. Minimum of 6 stanzas with at least two lines each.

#5 Music - Choose a familiar melody, such as Mary Had a Little Lamb, and change the lyrics so they pertain to the novel. Handwrite or type the song. Add illustrations to highlight important elements of your new song.

#6 Report – Write a classic book report telling us about the setting, characters, rising action, climax, and solution to the problem. Tell us why you liked this book. Talk about the author’s writing style and what you liked about it. Neatly handwrite or type your report.

6th grade – Puppets, Plays and Pairs :

With a partner, buddy, classmate or friend, choose your own book that is NOT from the reading list. Please pick a book at least 200 pages in length and appropriate reading level. You two will create an imaginative project that reflects the main characters, setting and plot of the story.

Create a mini version of your chosen book in play format to perform with handmade puppets. You will turn in a typed or very, very neatly hand written script of your play. Typed is always preferred. You and a friend or friends will perform your short play for the class. Play length should be around three minutes with a five minute maximum. Your play needs to give enough information about the story to demonstrate you have a good grasp of the book, but do not reveal the whole climax. Just give enough information to make your audience want to read the book but don’t give the whole story away! OR your play can be a brief re-enactment of an especially exciting event in the story.

The main focus is your choice of characters and how you write the script. Puppets can be simple wooden craft sticks, paper bags, paper plates, socks or felt.
