Welcome to Kindergarten! I am so excited to be working with you and your child this year. We have a wonderful year ahead of us. On this site you will find information about our classroom, upcoming events, photos from activities and much more!
ANNOUNCEMENTS 5/6/12: We are in the home stretch of the year! The next month will be very busy. We are learning about life cycles in science- first we are looking at the life cycle of butterflies. Our 5 caterpillars arrived last week and we have been watching them grow. We can’t wait until they make a chrysalis! Following caterpillars, we will learn about the life cycles of other animals and how some animals come from an egg. We will also learn about plants and will be planting sunflower seeds mid month. We will learn about the parts of a plant and review needs of living things as we care for our plants. We will learn that all things grow and change- including ourselves! In social studies we are learning about our Earth. We learned about the 3 R’s for Earth Day and now are learning about our place in the world. We will look at maps and globes, use directional words, and learn about our city, state, country, continent and world! In math we have been working on a calendar review and telling time to the hour. Our last unit of study will be addition and subtraction. We already have been doing this informally, now we will use the mathematical symbols and write addition and subtraction sentences In language arts we continue daily 5 and now are reading several different books. We are continuing to work on retelling stories. We have been focusing on the “h brothers” (th, ch, sh, wh) as well as adding new words to our growing list of High Frequency Words- this week we focused on the word “little” and learned the first two of our number spelling songs and learned how to spell “one” and “two”. The next few weeks will bring testing as well as we are nearing the end of the year and report card time. Some things to practice at home to ensure a positive end of the year are to review the HFW, read daily (if you aren’t- have your child read to you! That’s a great way to practice those little books I send home!), and make sure your child gets a good nights rest… we will be busy these last few weeks!
What to work on at home: read daily! Please review high frequency words- these are the words your child will encounter in our early reading books. If your child has not counted to 100 yet- please keep practicing :)
Letters/sounds to date: Review all!! HOMEWORK: "Me on the map" address sheet
