Next Tuesday and Thursday evening, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. we are having Parent – Teacher conferences. Conferences are not scheduled for grades 6 – 8 since Mrs. Conway, Mr. Wright, and I all teach core subjects and often parents need to see more than just the homeroom teacher. If every parent needed to see me from grades 5 – 8, I would need at least 60 slots. Obviously there are not enough slots to schedule them.
You do need to see me one of those evenings (unless you already requested a Friday morning appointment which we were able to schedule.) Generally the wait is not too long. Most parents were able to visit Mrs. Conway if they were unable to see me first.
Book orders went home today. They are due on Thursday. If you wanted to purchase anything for Christmas, give me the order at conference and we will arrange a private pick up time.
Please note, late assignments have been picking up lately. In the future, if any of your children get three or more a week, you will receive a “Note of Concern”.
I am looking forward to meeting with you next week.

Dear Parents:
MEAPS are finally done! Hooray!!! We are entering the final week of the quarter. Here is a quick update as to where we are:
Religion: We are completing the First Period in Bible History (Creation to 2200 BC). Next quarter we will cover the Time of the Judges, and the division of the kingdom to the birth of Christ.
A reminder: Lack of sermon reports and service hours are having an effect on some of the students grades. Remind your child to do a sermon report this Sunday. There are also two opportunities for Service Hours that became available this week. Mr. Barnum, our custodian could use help before and after school removing black marks from the floor. They are particularly heavy on Monday and Wednesday following church and chapel. Also, on Sunday, the youth are sponsoring a community raking service. They are serving a hot dog lunch for anyone wishing to rake and then they will all fan out into the neighborhood. Sixth thru Eighth grade students are invited to participate. If you are unable to go out with your child, Mrs. Burmeister will assign him/her to a team with an adult. Bring your own rake.
Literature: We just finished Collection One on Elements of a Story. This class has done very well with this unit. Our next unit focuses on historical figures. The majority of the class is doing well with AR. I will figure out their AR grade this weekend. If it is below a C, they will stay in at recess next week to pull that grade up.
Grammar: This past quarter we focused on nouns, verbs and capitalization/punctuation.
Writing: We just completed out second major writing project for the quarter. They wrote a diary of an animal. They are a mixture of fact and creativity. I hope to get them posted next week on their writing wiki for all to read. We are also becoming more proficient in proofreading and editing. We will be doing a research report next quarter.
Social Studies: We are concluding our unit on the United States with learning about the election process, and then we will move on to Canada.
Math: Mrs. Conway reports that they have completed operations with whole numbers and decimals. They have also started Introduction to Pre-algebra. Next quarter they will continue with the intro to pre-algebra and begin fractions.
Science: The section on Life Sciences will be completed by next week. Next quarter they will cover the Human Body. Don’t forget, there is a test on Monday.
Music: Reminde r that the 6/7/8 Choir sings this Sunday at the 10:45 service. This will be our first service in the new church. Meet in the music room at 10:30.
On Tuesday, October 28 at 6:30 there is a meeting with our new band teacher in the music room. All band parents should be there.
Blessings on your week!

Dear Parents:
We are already at midterm. On Tuesday you will receive a report of your child’s progress to date. Keep in mind that it is only a four week report. There is another four weeks to change or maintain the current grades.
A few reminders:
Chapel Offering: Our offerings for first quarter are going to the Lutheran Church in Wittenberg, Germany toward the purchase of a baptismal font. Although Lutheran is the official denomination of Germany, problems exist. The German Lutheran Church has strayed from its original doctrine. Few people attend church on a regular basis. The Lutheran Church is trying to re-establish a presence in Germany. Please encourage your child to help support this worthy cause.
AR: Each student has been assigned a goal to reach this quarter. It is very low, due to the late start we got with the library, etc. Please remind your child to read 100 minutes a week and complete their reading logs.
Assignments: I am pretty good about posting assignments on the web, but there are days that I do not get to it. The ultimate responsibility lies with your child to have the assignments in their planner.
Planned Absences: If you know that your child is going to be missing a day or a large portion of a day due to a doctor’s appointment or other planned absence, PLEASE let us know a day ahead of time so we can send assignments home with him/her. If that is not possible, please make arrangements to pick up the assignments at the end of the day.
Sermon Reports/Service Hours: By now your child should have at least two sermon reports and one service hour completed. You may have to encourage your child in this area. Service hours may include helping elderly neighbors rake the lawn or shovel for no renumeration, making cookies or taking small plants to a nursing home, doing volunteer work in the community, etc. Doing work for a family member does not count.
MEAP Tests: Meap tests will be given on the following dates in the morning:
October 14 th – Math
October 16 th ELA – Part 1
October 21 st ELA – Part 2
October 23 rd – Social Studies
Please do not make appointments for those mornings.
Important Dates: Please keep October 26th and November 2nd open on your calendar. The 6/7/8 choir will be singing at the 10:45 service on the 26 th. November 2nd is the Dedication Service. The entire school will sing at the 9:30 service. This service is followed by a dinner. Watch for information for tickets.
We have settled into a good routine and the students have a clear understanding of what is expected of them. God has blessed this class with many gifts. It is a pleasure watching them help each other as they share these gifts with others. We are off to a great year!!!!

Dear Parents:
We had a great week. The students are for the most part using their time well and doing well. I am in the process of setting up my online gradebook. I hope to record all grades this weekend. Check your child’s binder on Monday to see the work they have accomplished in the past couple of weeks.
Literature: We learned about the depression and compared how life for students was different and yet the same for students in the 30s. We also talked about the internal conflict we experience at times – often because we are Christian.
Grammar: We practiced fixing run-on sentences, comma splices, and fragments.
Social Studies: We have been reviewing the events that led to the end of the Revolution. Starting next week we will study the Constitution
Law and Gospel was the topic in Religion. We practiced discerning the difference between law and gospel in the scriptures. Remind your student that Bible Journals are due on Wednesday morning.
Mrs. Conway reports that next week the class will have a Science Test on Tuesday and a Math Test on Thursday.

AUGUST
I enjoyed seeing so many of you at registration yesterday. This is going to be such an exciting year. I went over to the school yesterday to look at our classroom. It is beautiful. Almost everything in the classroom is brand new – technology, furniture, and of course the room itself. What is not new is the love of Christ which surrounds, protects, and permeates Our Savior Lutheran Church and School and its programs, staff, members, children, and parents. What a blessing it is to know that we are more than a place, but a family, with Christ as our head.
TEACHERS: I am the Sixth Grade Homeroom Teacher. I will be teaching 6th Grade Religion, Literature, English, and Social Studies. Mrs. Julie Conway will teach Math and Science. We have entered into a shared partnership with Lansing School District who will be providing us with teachers in Band, Art, Spanish, PE, and Computer.
NEW WEBSITE: I have set up a new website this year. While it is currently under construction, please feel free to view it, bookmark it, and subscribe to the RSS Feed at the end of the menu (* See end of letter for an explanation.) Currently there is a description of each class, requirements, and grading policy for each of the subject areas I teach. This will be eventually be replaced with current updates as to what we are covering in the class, special projects, etc.

CONTACT INFORMATION: You can reach me at school (882-3550) between 7:30 AM and 5:30 PM most days. My cell phone number is ###-####. If I do not answer, please leave a message. Often the most efficient ways to contact me is through e-mail. My e-mail address is wgreve@yahoo.com ; It is also linked at the top of my web page.
PARENT HANDBOOK: The handbook went through major revisions this year. Please read through it carefully – especially the sections on dress code and requirements for Honor Roll.
SCHOOL SUPPLIES: For those of you that attended Our Savior last year, many of the supplies were purchased last year. There is a list posted on my website.
LOCKERS: This year we have full-length lockers. They are roomier than the ones we have had in the past. However, there is no room for the purchased locker shelves many students have used in the past, so please do not purchase them this year.
WATER BOTTLES: Due to the configuration of the building, we do not have a readily accessible water fountain. I am encouraging students to bring a water bottle to school each day (no larger than 20 oz and with a cap on it). In the past I have found out that if you freeze it overnight, by the time school starts some of the ice will have melted enough to drink. I will also have dixie cups available for use in the classroom (donations appreciated).
OPEN HOUSE: On Sunday, August 24th, from 11:00 – 2:00 we will have an open house. I strong encourage you to visit the classrooms and tour the building. I think you will be amazed at its beauty. Since it is a Community Open House, I encourage you to bring friends and family as well.
COMMUNICATION: Much of my class information will be sent to you via email and through my website this year. Please let me know if this will present a problem for you. If it does I will send a paper copy home. My experience with most middle school students is that paper copies do not get home, or if they do, do not get into parents hands right away. I am hoping that this will give you needed information in a timely manner.
I am looking forward to being a partner with you in your child’s education. Please feel free to contact me at any time, with questions or concerns.
* RSS is a format for delivering regularly changing web content. Each TeacherWeb site has an RSS feed, which is updated whenever an update is made to one of the site's pages. Parents and students can use an RSS Reader to subscribe to the site's RSS feed. The RSS feed will provide information on the site's latest updates, with links to the most recently updated pages.
