PINK EYE!
Have never seen such a stubborn and widespread outbreak as we have been experiencing recently. Mr. Fry has been diligently cleaning as usual, and also applied bleach solution a number of times. Volunteers have also cleaned the lockers. Hand washing is encouraged, as always.
Here are a couple of things you can do to help get this under control.
1-Understand what it is. Pink eye (conjunctivitis) can affect one or both eyes. Most common symptom is discomfort in the eye, which may feel itchy or gritty. There is often some discharge from the eye(s) and pain, swelling of the conjunctiva (surface of eye and inner part of eyelid), and the very pink or red coloring that gives the infection its nickname. (Taken from kidshealth.org)
2-While not thought to be contagious before symptoms occur, the incubation period can be a few days up to a couple of weeks.
3-While there may be some over the counter treatments that deal with the symptoms, it is my understanding that only prescription medication actually addresses the infection.
4-As with all prescriptions, it is important that the eye drops are given as prescribed, and the full course of the treatment is administered, even after symptoms disappear.
5-According to the Wayne County School Health manual, students may return to school after medical treatment has begun so long as there is no longer any discharge from the eye.
6-As with anything that is communicable, regular and thorough hand washing can make a big difference.
