FAQFrequently Asked Questions: This page contains answers to common questions of students and parents.
Can I sit with my child at Mass on Wednesdays? Yes! We sit in the first two rows on the side by the Holy Family statues. Can I send in a treat for my child's birthday? Yes! Cupcakes, individualized ice cream or popsicles, cookies, popcorn, ricecrispie treats,(please- no cake)etc. No need to send in a beverage. We have a waterfountain. Please make enough treats for the children ONLY. We have 14 this year. Although the children liked bringing treats to the other teachers, we have found that it interrupts teaching that is taking place and it keeps your child from instruction that occurs while he/she is out of the room. Does my child have to wear boots, snowpants and a hat when it snows. Yes! We really care about their health and safety. No child is comfortable if their socks and pants become wet from snow. Most of the body heat escapes through the head if it is uncovered. During the winter months it is a good idea to pack an extra pair of socks, a sweater, and waterproof gloves-not those trendy little stretchy gloves because they do not provide warmth. We do not go outside if the wind chill or actual temperature is in the single digits. Can my child decorate her locker? No! We decorate our lockers with our own work. Inside mirrors and shelving etc. are really not necessary for a first grader and can become very distracting. Can my child have a water bottle at School? Yes- provided it has a tight lid and is taken home for washing. Can my child have a hand sanitizer? Yes! he or she can keep it in their locker so they can sanitize their hands before snack, lunch, etc. What about colds and sore throats? When your child is ill,s/he should stay home if there is a fever present-even if medicating with Tylenol makes it go away for a while-because that is when they are contagious and when they need to be resting in order to fight the infection. If your child has a sore throat with fever and swollen glands, s/he should be checked for Strep throat by your doctor. An untreated Strep infection can develop into Scarlet Fever and Rheumatic Fever, causing heart damage and joint damage. So it is worth it to be on the safe side and go for a swab of the throat. Antibiotics would be prescribed for a strep infection. Your child may return after being on the antibiotic for at least 24 hours if fever free. The entire prescription should be taken to ensure that the bacteria is destroyed completely and does not develop resistance to this antibiotic in the future. If the whites of your child's eyes are pink and are producing discharge (stuck together when they wake up), are sensitive to the light, and feel grainy and irritable, they may have conjunctivitis/pink eye and are very contagious. They cannot be in school until the infection clears. There are two types: viral- which cannot be treated with drops; and bacterial- which is treated with drops you will have to get from your doctor. |
