Throughout the year, we have reading homework Monday through Thursday. I
expect that each student take home their reading folder, practice the weekly
story and vocabulary/ spelling words for at least 15 minutes nightly. On
Fridays, each must return their Homework Reading Log signed by a parent
indicating that they did their daily homework, how long, and with whom.
Please remind your child to bring their reading folder back to school each
day since we use the book and word cards in our daily TASK program.
Ideas for practicing weekly Reading Vocabulary and Spelling word cards:
-have your child make sentences with the words orally (silly ones work too)
because this allows you to see if they understand the correct meaning/ use of
the word.
-have them "write" the word on the carpet, or other bumpy surface with their
finger so that they can get a tactile feel for the word.
- put a blob of shaving cream on the kitchen counter, bathtub wall, or table
and have them write out the words with their finger
-create a song, rap, or cheer to spell out the words
-trace the word on your child's back and then he/she can trace it on yours
- put the words in ABC order (second half of the year)
- find similarities in the spelling words
-change the beginning letter of spelling words to make a word that rhymes
Note: each card is marked "S" for Spelling, "R" for Reading or "R/S" for both.
Brain based research tells us that the more avenues we use to get
information into our brain (visual, auditory, tactile -see, hear and feel-)
the more easily the brain will remember.
