6th Grade Class/Section Notes

Word Bank:

System: A set of objects that are related in some way and can be isolated for study.

Aeronautics: The science dealing with the operation of aircraft.

Anemometer: An instrument used to measure the speed of wind.

Aileron: A movable airfoil at the trailing edge of an airplane wing that controls the banking of the airplane.

Barometer: An instrument used to measure the pressure of the atmosphere, which assists in forecasting the weather.

- capacity- Amount of water the boat can hold when filled to the brim. measured in mL.

- Independent Variable- The variable we know before the experiment starts (on x-axis). Examples: Capacity of boat. Length of pendulum.

- Dependent Variable- The variable that is affected in an experiment. (goes on y-axis). Examples: Number of passengers (pennies). Number of swings.

- Two-Coordinate graph - shows relationship between the independent and the dependent variables. How does the independent variable affect the dependent variable?

-pendulum - a mass hanging from a fixed position that is allowed to swing freely to and fro

-cycle -any motion or activity that repeats itself

-variable -anything that you can change in an experiment that might affect the outcome.
Standard- a basic procedure used in a controlled experiment, before changing any variables.
controlled experiment-an experiment in which one, and only one, variable is changed in order to assess its effect

two-coordinate graph-shows the outcome of a series of experiments when a variable is changed in steps
prediction- an estimate based on information or experience

The longer the pendulum, the fewer the swings

The shorter the pendulum, the greater the swings

The greater the number of swings, the shorter the pendulum

The fewer the number of swings, the longer the pendulum
