What if my son/daughter needs help with their homework?
I am here every morning at 7:00 am and can stay after school until
4:00 pm if a student needs help on their homework. OR if a student
just needs more time to work on their homework, they can come in
during these times as well to work in a quiet setting.
What can the parent do to help their son/daughter if they are struggling?
First of all check to see how your son/daughter is reading the
textbook. A student MUST read the assigned section BEFORE starting
the worksheet. ALSO, a student should get in the habit of reading
a section MORE THAN ONCE!! A textbook is very difficult to read and
because of this a person MUST read a section multiple times if
necessary, in order to understand it. And, contrary to popular
belief, multi-tasking does NOT work. A student cannot be trying to
ingest new material while watching TV, listening to loud music, or
texting/talking on the phone. (Scientific research has now proven
this to be true). :)
How is the student graded in this class?
I DO NOT GRADE ON A CURVE! All work is graded equally on a
cumulative score. In the beginning of the quarter any assignments
that are missed will have a SEVERE impact on a student's grade, but
this will even out as more assignments come in.
90-100% A- to A+
80-89% B- to B+
70-79% C- to C+
60-69% D- to D+
59% and below F
What is your policy on late work?
It is the student's responsibility to turn work in ON TIME. If you are sick
or have an excused absence I will accept late work one day later for every day
which you are gone. Otherwise I will only accept work turned in one day late
for 50% of the score earned (you cannot get full credit for "I forgot to
it in", etc.). I will NOT accept work which is MORE than one day late. A
student MAY come in AFTER or BEFORE school to REDO a WORKSHEET which they
forgot to turn in. I will then give them full credit for the work done, but
the payment is the student's time for the points. I will announce cut-off
dates for doing this on each unit.
How much homework will the student be expected to do?
Generally at the beginning of units, the students can expect to
have homework EVERY night (though I try to avoid Wednesday nights).
Do NOT expect me to always be able to provide class time for
homework. Class time is needed for discussions and instructional
time and it is very rare in my classes for there to be ANY time
remaining except to quickly go over instructions for that night's
homework. I do try to assign larger/longer worksheets over the
weekends rather than overnight.
