SCHOLARSHIP DESCRIPTIONS

 

 

Listed below are the local scholarships for which seniors may apply for.

 

 

 

 

AGRICULTURE/CONSERVATION

 

The Bertle and Lucille Wennblom Scholarships - four awards of $1,000 each

 

These scholarships will be awarded to four students on the basis of citizenship, character, ability and desire for further education.  A student's G.P.A. shall not be the determining factor in the selection process.  The awards will be presented to students majoring in agriculture or related fields at any accredited college, university, junior college or vocational college.  If there is no qualified applicant majoring in agriculture, then it will go to someone majoring in the medical field.   

 

 

 

 

ATHLETIC

 

Cannon Golf Course Scholarships - two awards of $300 each

 

These scholarships will be awarded to students who are currently participating on the High School golf team and who plan to continue their education at an accredited college, university or vocational college.  Consideration is given to the applicant's academic achievement, character, athletic participation and other curricular and extracurricular activities.

 

Cannon Falls Bomber Booster Scholarships - two awards of $500 each

 

These scholarships will be awarded to one girl and one boy who have maintained academic standards (students must have a 2.3 cumulative GPA or better) and followed MSHSL guidelines and received no MSHSL violations while participating in athletics.  The applicants must have been a participant in a sanctioned CFHS athletic program in grades 10 - 12, and completed that season of competition.  This scholarship may be used at any 4-year university or 2 year vocational and technical college.  Selection of finalists is made by the Head Coaches and members of the Booster Club.

 


 

 

 

AUTO AND TRUCK REPAIR

 

Sandstrom Auto and Truck Repair Scholarship - one award of $1,000

 

This scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior who is pursuing a career in the auto and truck repair industry.  The student needs to attend a 2-year technical school upon graduation.  A reference letter from a teacher is required.  Selection will be made by the management at Sandstrom Auto and Truck Repair, Inc. 

 

 

 

 

BUSINESS

 

 

Cannon Falls Chamber of Commerce Scholarship - one award of $500

 

This scholarship is based on the applicant's academic record, business aptitude, character, and desire to excel in business.  This scholarship may be used for any accredited four-year college, university, 2-year college, vocational or trade school.  Selection of the recipient shall be made by secret ballot by the High School Faculty.

 

 

First Farmers and Merchants Bank Scholarship - one award of $500

 

This scholarship is based upon the applicant's desire to excel in business and/or banking.  This scholarship may be used for any 2 or 4-year college.  Selection is

made by secret ballot by the High School Faculty. 

 

 

White Rock Bank Scholarships - two awards of $500 each

 

These scholarships are for students interested in pursuing a career in business (including Agri-Business) and/or banking.  These scholarships may be used at

any university, accredited college or vocational college.  Selection is based on desire

for higher education and student's character.  Selection is made by secret ballot by

the High School Faculty.


 

 

BUSINESS/EDUCATION

 

Cannon Falls Rotary Club Scholarship

Two awards of  $1,000 and two awards of $500

 

These scholarships will be awarded to four seniors who have chosen to pursue education in business, education, international relations, or the trade fields at any university, accredited college, vocational college or trade school.  Selection shall be made on the basis of academic record (student must have a 2.5 cumulative GPA or better), financial need, character, citizenship, and sense of purpose.  Applicants must include two letters of references with their application.  Selection is made by two Rotary Club members and the High School Principal and Guidance Counselor. 

 

 

The Morris Callstrom Memorial Scholarship - one award of $500

 

This scholarship was established by Morris and Delories Callstrom who graduated from Cannon Falls High School in 1940 and 1942.  Morris taught rural school for one year before entering the Army in World War II.  This scholarship is in memory of Morris  and in honor of daughter Karen Callstrom Strusz who taught for over 30 years.  The scholarship is available to any senior in the upper 50% of their class who will be attending a 4-year college or university pursuing a degree in teaching.  The scholarship is awarded on the basis of character and an essay of 200 words or less, “How did a teacher influence your decision to become a teacher?”  Selection shall be made by members of the High School professional staff and a member of the family.

 

 

Cannon Falls Education Association Scholarship - one award of $1,000

 

This scholarship is established by the faculty of School District #252 through there

membership in the Cannon Falls Education Association.  It is available to any senior

in the upper 50% of their class who will be attending college to pursue a degree in

teaching.  The scholarship is awarded on the basis of character, a desire to become

a teacher, and an essay of 200 words or less on the topic, “Why I would like to become a teacher”.  Selection is made by the High School faculty.

 

 

The Sandy Finnerty Memorial Scholarship - one award of $1,000

 

This scholarship is in memory of Sandy Finnerty, who was a dedicated teacher at the Cannon Falls Area Elementary School for over 30 years.  The family and the Cannon Falls Education Foundation are offering this scholarship to any senior who is in the upper 50% of their class, will be attending a 4 year college or university and will be pursing a degree in education.  An essay on why you want to be a teacher

is also required.  Selection will be made by a five-member committee.


 

 

EMERGENCY SERVICES/MEDICAL

 

Cannon Falls Fire Department Scholarship - one award of $2,000

 

This scholarship is given by the Cannon Falls Fire Department.  It shall be awarded to a senior who has chosen to further his/her education in an area of Emergency Services.  Such an area might include: paramedics, nursing, law enforcement, fire and rescue, etc.  The scholarship may be used at any accredited university, college, community and technical colleges, or other post-secondary school acceptable to the selection committee.  The selection committee will be members of the Cannon Falls Fire Department.  G.P.A. and class rank will not be a factor in the selection process.  Selection will be made on the basis on volunteer service, community involvement, leadership, character and the desire to serve.  A separate application form and a letter of recommendation will be needed from each applicant.

GENERAL

 

The Al Flom Scholarship - one award of $1,000

 

This scholarship is given in memory of Al Flom by the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Cannon Falls and shall be used for continued education of at least two years in any degree-granting college, university, or technical college leading to a degree.  Selection is awarded on the basis of financial need, leadership, citizenship, character, and the desire to reach your career goals.  Selection will be made by a

five-member committee.

 

Cannon Eye Clinic Scholarship - one award of $1,000

 

This will be awarded to a graduating senior who is an active member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletics, (FCA).  The selection of the recipient will be based on leadership and character.  Current members of the FCA and the huddle coach will make the selection. 

 

Cannon Falls Scholarship - one award of $1,000

 

This scholarship is given by Mr. Algot Johnson, a former graduate of this school, and member of the Veterans of Wars Post.  Selection is based on scholarship, leadership, citizenship, character, a desire for higher education, and economic need.  Selection is made by the School Board Chairman, the Mayor of Cannon Falls, the President of the Rotary Club, and the President of the Tuesday Club.  This scholarship is good for any accredited four-year college or university.  Students must be in the upper 25% of their class during their years in the senior high school to apply for this scholarship.

 

Cannon Falls Community Resource Bank Scholarship – one award of $500

 

This scholarship is based on high school involvement and activities.  This scholarship

will be awarded to a graduating senior attending any accredited college, university or

technical college leading to a degree.  Selection will be made the High School Faculty.

 

Cannon Equipment Midwest Scholarship - one award of $1,000

 

This scholarship is offered by Cannon Equipment Midwest.  It is the goal of the company to help financially and encourage students graduating from High School to continue their education, whether it is at a vocational school, community college or four-year college or university.  The recipient of this scholarship must have a parent working at Cannon Equipment Midwest.  This scholarship will be awarded on the basis of desire for higher education and financial need.  Selection of this scholarship will be by the Principal and Guidance Counselor.  (Please see Deb for this application form.)

 

Cannon Falls Lions Club Scholarship – one award of $500

This new scholarship will be awarded to a senior who will be pursuing their education

at a community or technical college.  Selection will be based upon financial need,

character and desire for further education.  The High School Counselor and two members of the Lions Club will make the selection.

 

Cannon Falls Masonic Lodge Scholarship - one award of $2,000

 

This scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior and is based on academic record, character, citizenship, and sense of purpose.  Two letters of recommendation are required.  Selection shall be made by the Principal, Counselor and members of the Masonic Lodge.  The top finalists will be interview by members of the Masonic Lodge.

 

Church of St. Pius V Scholarship - one award of $500

 

This scholarship is given by the Church of St. Pius V.  The scholarship is for a student who plans to attend a four-year college.  Selection is based on academics, character, citizenship and sense of purpose.  Faculty members will be involved in the selection

process.  Monies for this scholarship were made available through community participation at church.

 

Coca-Cola Scholarship – one award of $300

 

This is given by the Viking Coca-Cola Bottling Company to a deserving student as chosen by the high school faculty.  This scholarship is to reward leadership and excellence as exemplified through academic achievement and extracurricular activities, including commitment to community service.  The recipient must have a 3.0 cume G.P.A. or higher and be accepted at a 2 or 4 year college to receive this scholarship.


 

Dakota County Technical College Presidential Scholarship – one award of $1,000

 

This scholarship is given from the Dakota County Technical College.  It will be awarded to a deserving senior who intends to enroll at DCTC in the fall.  Selection is made by

the Counselor at Cannon Falls High School.

 

Dakota Electric Association Scholarship - one award of $500

 

This scholarship is given from Dakota Electric Association in Farmington.  This scholarship shall be awarded to a senior who has chosen to further their education

at any university, accredited college, vocational or trade school.  The scholarship

is awarded on the basis of character, leadership, involvement in school/community

and financial need.  The High School faculty will be involved in the selection process.

 

The Logan D. Ellison Scholarship - one award of $500

 

This scholarship is from the friends and family of Logan D. Ellison.  Logan, at the young age of 7 years old, died tragically as a result of a car accident in September of 2001. 

To apply for this scholarship, an application must be submitted along with a letter describing a hardship endured by a graduating senior.  A scholarship committee consisting of family members and friends will review the applications and letters and

will determine the recipient.  (See Deb for a separate application.)

 

First English Lutheran Church Foundation Scholarship - one award of $250

 

This scholarship is available to any senior that is in the upper 50% of their class and will be attending a four-year accredited college or university and pursuing a degree-granting program.  This scholarship is awarded on the basis of scholarship, leadership, citizenship, character, and a desire for higher education.  Selection is made by secret ballot by the high school professional staff.  This scholarship is funded by the First English Lutheran Church Foundation.  

 

Merchants Bank Scholarships - two awards of $4,000 each

 

These scholarships will be awarded to two graduating seniors who are in the top 25% of their class and will be attending an accredited university, college, junior college, or vocational technical college.  Selection is based on leadership, school involvement, community involvement and character.  Voting is done by High School Faculty and Principal.   (An essay is required that can be on any subject.) 


 

Goodhue County Cooperative Electric Scholarship - one award of $300

 

This scholarship is given from the Goodhue County Cooperative Electric Association in

Zumbrota.  The scholarship shall be awarded to a senior who has chosen to further their education at any university, college, vocational or trade school.  The scholarship is awarded on the basis of financial need, character, and school/community involvement. 

To be able to apply you must be a son or daughter of a current member of Goodhue County Cooperative Electric.  Selection shall be made by members of the High School Professional staff. 

 

The Interact Scholarship - one award of $700

 

This scholarship will be given by the Interact organization at Cannon Falls High School and will be awarded to a student who plans on continuing their education at a technical or a two or four year college/university.  Selection will be based upon leadership, character and service within the school and community.  The recipient needs to be a member of the Interact organization.  A short one page essay is required describing what qualifications you have to receive this award and your plans to continue your involvement in community and international service.  Interact members will select the recipient, whose name will not appear on the application and essay in order to ensure fairness. 

 

The Miesville Lions Club Scholarships - two awards of $1,250 each

 

This award will go to any deserving student to be decided by a committee of Miesville Lions Club Members.  The award can be applied to any accredited college, university, junior college or trade school.   Payment will be upon receipt of the student's grades, which must be a 2.0 GPA (C) or better.

 

Benjamin Schiell Memorial Scholarship - one award of $250

 

This scholarship is dedicated in memory of Benjamin Dale Schiell.  Ben was a member of the class of 2003 and was very active in wrestling, football, fishing, hunting and 4-H calf roping.  Ben loved learning, helping others and working on computers.  This scholarship is a way for the Dennis Schiell family to say thank you for the support you have given them.  The award may be used at any college, university, technical or trade school.  This scholarship will be based on a student’s involvement in extra-curricular activities.  GPA and class rank will not be a factor.  A short one-page essay is required from the senior on their involvement in school, community and extra-curricular activities.  Explain also how sportsmanship and being a leader has bettered your life.  Please include your future goals too.  Selection will be made by the Dennis Schiell family with input from selected coaches or teachers.


 

Student Council Scholarship - Two-year Vocational/Community College -

one award of $450

 

This scholarship is awarded to a student who will be attending an accredited vocational college or community college approved by the Minnesota Department of Education.  Selection is made by Student Council members.  You need not be a member of the Student Council to apply for this scholarship.

        

Student Council Scholarships - Four-year College/University -

three awards of $600 each

 

These scholarships are awarded to three students who will be attending an accredited four-year college or university.  Selection is made by Student Council members.  You need not be a member of the Student Council to apply for this scholarship.

 

Southern Twin Cities REALTORS® Charitable Foundation Scholarship

This scholarship will be awarded to a high senior who lives in Dakota, Goodhue, Rice or Scott County.  It is based on academic achievement, school activities, community service and financial need.  An essay on how you have been able to achieve success both academically and socially, along with discussion of major obstacles you have faced and overcome is required.  Two letters of recommendation are also required.  Selection is made by a committee of REALTORS®.  The scholarship is funded by MW Johnson Construction.  See Deb for the application.

 

The Jeff Zimmerman Scholarship - one award of $500

 

This scholarship is established and dedicated to the memory of Jeff Zimmerman, a member of the class of 1987, by his family and friends.  This award may be used for any college, university, technical college or trade school and is based on leadership, character, and desire for further education, not on GPA.  Selection will be made by

the High School Faculty.

 

 


 

 

MATHEMATICS/SCIENCE

 

Amesbury Group, Inc., Extruded Products Div. Scholarship - one award of $1,000

 

The purpose of the Amesbury Group Scholarship shall be to encourage bright young people to invest their futures in the effort to help America regain and maintain world leadership in product development and manufacturing.  Therefore, this scholarship will be awarded to a graduating student who, in the opinion of the Selection Committee, has demonstrated the highest standard of ethical and academic excellence, and whose career objective is in a field of applied science in American Industry.  This scholarship is not to be given on a "needs" basis, but rather on a performance basis; and is not restricted to four-year colleges only; technical or trade colleges may also be included.  Selection is made by a four-member committee.

 

 

MEDICAL

 

 

Cannon Falls Lions Club Scholarship - one award of $2,000

 

This scholarship will be awarded to a senior who has chosen to pursue their education in the medical field or in the health services field.  This scholarship may be used for any university, accredited college, vocational college or trade school.  Selection is based on academic record, financial need, character, citizenship, and sense of purpose.   Selection is made by the High School Counselor and two Lions Club members.

 

The Wennblom Scholarship - four awards of $1,000

The Marilyn Rohr Scholarship - one award of $250

 

This scholarship is established and dedicated in memory of Marilyn Rohr, a dedicated nurse at the Cannon Falls Community Hospital for 30 years.  The award will be used by the recipient to pursue a career in nursing.  The scholarship needs to be used for continued education of at least two years in any degree-granting, accredited college, university, or technical college leading to a degree or certificate.  Selection of the recipient shall be made on the basis of scholarship, leadership, character, and desire for higher education.  Selection is made by a five-member committee. 

 

The Mathilda Ostrom Memorial Fund Scholarship - one award of $2,000.

MUSIC

 
Cannon Falls Band Boosters Scholarship – one award of $250

 

This scholarship is given from the CFHS Band Booster Club and will be awarded to a member of the Cannon Falls High Band who has plans to be involved in a college band performance program.  This scholarship is based on character and leadership qualities.  An essay is required to show your high school band experience and your leadership in the band program.  It should also include how you may have impacted the program and your fellow band students in a positive way plus your plans for continuing participation in band through college.  A committee of band booster members plus band directors Joel Bryan and Mike Legvold will be selecting the recipient.

 

 

Men’s and Women’s Community Choir Music Scholarship – one award of $250

 

This new scholarship is given by the members of the men’s and

women’s community choir and will be awarded to a deserving student who

is pursuing a music career either instrumental or vocal at a 2 or 4 year college.

A short essay is required on why they are pursuing a music career.  A letter

of recommendation is also required.  Selection will be made by members of

the choir and will be based upon the student’s essay, letter of recommendation

and involvement in music. 

 

 

Veterans of Foreign Wars Scholarship – two awards of $500

 

These scholarships will be awarded to graduating seniors who have been active in music and in the community and who will be attending an accredited college, university, junior college or vocational college.  Selection will be made by members of the Cannon Falls Veterans of Foreign Wars Post.

 

 

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

* PLEASE NOTE:  Applicants selected for more than one Cannon Falls Scholarship will receive only the award of greatest value, unless the student is the only qualified applicant for one of the scholarships he/she applied for.  This does not include such awards as the Cannon Eye Clinic, Band Boosters, VFW, Mathilda Ostrom, Cannon Equipment Midwest, Cannon Golf Club, Cannon Falls Fire Department, Morris Callstrom, Sandy Finnerty, Ben Schiell, and Cannon Falls Education Association Scholarship.
