TECHNOLOGY SKILLS

Students will select and use appropriate technology for educational and personal goals.

1.      Students identify hardware components such as mouse, keyboard, monitor, headphones, and printer.

2.      Students use the space bar and letter/number, enter/return, arrow keys, Esc, delete and shift keys on the keyboard.

3.      Students use right/left hand positioning on the keyboard and maintain correct posture at the keyboard.

4.      Students use the mouse to pull down menus, click, double-click, and click-drag in order to select text, options or launch and exit programs.

5.      Students understand the difference between selecting text and graphics.

6.      Students understand software related icons and symbols such as the hour glass/clock  icon, cursor, scroll bar, window, desktop and task bar.

7.      Students change font style and size.

8.      Students open, name, save and print documents.

9.      Students insert and resize graphics and text at an insertion point.

10.  Students use graphics tools, including pencil, fill, eraser, line, shapes, fill patterns, paint brush and spray can.

11.  Students understand how to log in to a network, site, or program with a username and password.

12.  Students start, stop and record on audio equipment or computer sound recording software.

13.  Students know how to use headphones and/or microphones.

RESEARCH PROCESS

Students will follow a systematic research process that involves formulating a question, gathering, evaluating, and organizing information, drawing conclusions, presenting results to an audience, and evaluating both the product and the process.

Question:

1.      Students generate questions based on interests, observations, information or stories.

Gather:

1.      Students identify information sources and locations.

a.       Students identify information experts around the school and community.

  1. Students understand that each book has a special place on a shelf and can use a shelf marker to mark the place.
  2. Students find easy reading, picture, fiction, non-fiction, reference, etc. books.
  3. Students locate designated areas in a library media center such as the computer lab, circulation desk and book return.
  4. Students identify the difference between fiction and non-fiction materials.
  5. Students identify call numbers on materials.
  6. Students use call numbers to locate a specific book.
  7. Students identify the parts of a book including author, illustrator and copyright (symbol and date).
  8. Students use a table of contents, index and glossary (introduce guide words) to find specific information in a book.
  9. Students locate a book using an electronic catalog.
  10. Students navigate to/on a pre-selected web site.
  11. Students understand the sequence of alphabetical order and can use it to find an article/word in a print encyclopedia or dictionary.
  12. Students conduct a simple keyword search in an online encyclopedia or age-appropriate site.

2.      Students identify the best source of information to locate an answer to a question (encyclopedia, dictionary, phone book, atlas).

3.      Students summarize and record information using a variety of methods.
