April 30, 2009 Dear Parents, Over this past week the United States Government and Health Agencies have issued alerts about the Swine Flu (H1N1 virus). This is an issue that does need to be watched and monitored. This is not the time to be overly reactive, but it is the time to review the normal procedures for staying healthy. 1. Wash your hands frequently with soap and water. 2. Limit contact with people who have flu like symptoms. 3. Drink plenty of fluids and get plenty of rest. 4. Sneeze or cough into a tissue or your sleeve. 5. If you have an influenza-like illness, please stay home from work or school until symptoms have been resolved for 24 hours. Cannon Falls Public School District has a developed plan in cooperation with the Cannon Falls Medical Center Mayo Health System for flu and many other types of health issues. The Hospital is connected with the State Department of Health and they coordinate with the Center for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta. Having preplanning in place will allow us to move quickly if the need arises. Please stay alert for any school closings or delays. Symptoms of Swine Flu are very similar to the general flu including but not limited to headache, fever, body aches, sore throat, coughing, diarrhea or vomiting. The severity can range from very mild to severe. If you are worried about your symptoms your health care provider will determine whether influenza testing or treatment is needed. Please note that this flu may cause a worsening of underlying chronic medical conditions including but not limited to asthma, allergies, weakened immune system or diabetes. I would like to repeat that currently it is a time to review plans and monitor this situation and watch for developments. Practice good health hygiene and be assured the District Nurse is monitoring for all health issues and will keep us informed. Sincerely, Todd Sesker Superintendent Cannon Falls Area Schools
