Who Qualifies?

To qualify for services in learning disabilities the student must be tested by the school psychologist and the Learning Disabilities teacher. They will give various standardized tests and will do observations. To qualify the student must have 1.) a gap between their ability and their achievment, 2.) difficulty with information processing, and 3.) severe underachievment in the classroom. To qualify for services in speech the student's speech must be: 1.) interfering with communication and 2.) be below 70 standard score on an articulation test To qualify for language services the student's language skills must 1.) interfere with communication and 2.) a language sample shows language below or different from students the same age or cognitive ability and 3.) score below a standard score of 70 on 2 normed tests To qualify for fluency disorder (stuttering) services the problem must: 1.) interfere with communication and 2.) occur during 5% of words on 2 or more speech samples These are the BASIC qualifications for SOME of the special education services.
