I have a Masters Degree in Elementary Education with Middle
School Mathematics and Social Studies certification. I have had the pleasure
of teaching nearly every grade in elementary school (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th,
6th) and then moving on up with that group to the middle school to teach 7th
and 8th grade math and social studies in Wabasha, a small community in
southeastern Minnesota. After moving to the metro area, I have taught 7th
and 8th grade math (including an accelerated 8th grade course, Core I).
This is my eighth year at Centennial Middle School; my first two years were
in the science department and the next six years in the math department.
I love to travel and have had the opportunity to go to Egypt, Greece,
Russia, England, Singapore, Vietnam, Malaysia, Borneo, Iceland, and Canada on
Minnesota Alliance for Geographic Education projects sponsored by the
National Geographic Society. I enjoy sharing these experiences with our
students. My husband and I love to bike, run, dance, play tennis and golf.
My son, Timothy, a University of St. Thomas grad was married this summer to
Sara, a U of M grad so that was pretty exciting for our family.
For the past 4 years I have mentored sixth and seventh grade girls
in a University of Mn program called GEM (Girls Excel in Mathematics) and
will encourage our girls to participate this year along with several of last
year's participants; our limit is about ten girls.
I look forward to a great year with our terrific new group of sixth
graders!
Team 601 strives to provide a meaningful learning experience where students
can grow and achieve in a comfortable, engaging, safe, and innovative
setting. In the sixth grade mathematics course a spectrum of mathematical
concepts will be presented in accordance with the NCTM Standards to foster
and encourage a fuller and deeper understanding of mathematical concepts
rather than rote memorization of facts. Thus, we will explore the
following mathematics concepts: number sense, patterns, algebraic thinking,
data and statistics, decimals, fractions, ratio, proportion, percent,
probablility, geometry, perimeter, area, volume, integers, functions, and
coordinate geometry. The objectives or course outcomes are as following:
1) Explore mathematical concepts in a variety of ways
2) Work cooperatively with classmates
3) Connect mathematical concepts to daily life
4) Learn and use correct mathematical terminology
5) Successfully complete all assigned activities
6) Engage in creative problem solving scenarios to enhance problem
solving abilities
7) Review material on a regular basis to enhance retention
8) Use technology as a tool to foster further understanding
