George Washington was the leader of the colonial army.  The Revolutionary War was long and difficult.  England had a very big army.  Washington did not have enough soldiers, guns, or food, but he still won the war.  He learned from the Indians to attack his enemies by surprise.  The Revolutionary War ended in 1781.

 

When George was 28 he married Martha.  She had two children from her first marriage.  George and Martha never had any children. 

In New York City on April 30, 1789, George Washington took the oath of office as President of the United States.  Washington served two terms as president of the United States.  He worked very hard.  Americans call George Washington “the father of our country”.  The second president was John Adams.

When Washington died he freed half his slaves.  Martha freed the other slaves one year later.  She died in 1802 two years after George.
