Today was the first day of summer school.  We practiced social

conversation.  We learned how to pronounce the name of every person

in the class.  We used a world map to locate all the countries. We

discovered that three students in the class speak three languages.

We had many differences, but we also had many things in common.

Everyone was happy to live in Minnesota, except in the winter.

Language experience writing is led by the teacher, following a shared experience.  Members of the class contribute ideas and vocabulary as the teacher writes.  This was written first in present tense, and later the students were challenged to identify the regular and irregular verbs and change them to the past tense.  This writing becomes the reading and grammar lesson for the class.  Various exercises can be done by individuals or pairs.  For example, a page can be cut into sentence strips and the students asked to reassemble them in sequence.  Or, the sentences can be cut apart and reassembled in correct word order. Students can use this to practice choral reading, or for pronunciation practice. Cloze activities can also be created to test the students’ comprehension.  This type of exercise can be easily adapted for a multi-level class.
