What is No Child Left Behind (NCLB)?

It's an education act,signed into law in 2002.
It helps students by:
 Aiming to ensure that every student has a high quality education
 Through challenging and motivating students, providing highly qualified 
teachers,who use proven teaching methods, and ensuring a safe,drug-free 
learning enviroment.
It helps parents by:
Schools are required to provide school report cards, so you can learn how 
well your child's school is performing for his or her grade level,and how 
you can help your child build important skills at home. You play a key role 
in your child's education-at home and at school!

What are the key parts of the NCLB Act?

Accountability requirements for states and schools:
Accountability means they have promised to work toward certain goals. Under 
the NCLB Act,schools are required to:
Set high standards (specific goals and expectations) for achievement,measure 
school progress using approved tests and,issue report charting school 
performance.
Accommodations for students with disabilities:
The accountability system required under the NCLB Act assesses the 
achievement of all students,including those with disabilities. The Act 
requires states to provide accommodations for students with disabilities 
during these assessments. For example, accommodations may include changes in 
the setting,format,or scheduling of the assessment.

What does standards and testing mean for your child?

High standards help motivate students. States must use appropriate tests to 
measure progress. 
For example, tests in all schools across the state should:
share the same content and performance standards, be consistant with 
nationally recognized professional and technical standard, measure students' 
academic abilities, and measure the same content for all students, including 
limited English proficient (LEP) students who have a learning or other 
disability.

Is reading achievement a key focus of the NCLB Act?

Your child's reading program should use proven teaching methods. 
These include:
Phonemic awareness,phonics,vocabulary,fluency,and comprehension.

How should you help your child develop a love of reading?

Read to your child every day, talk about the stories you read, let your 
child see you reading, remember, reading and writing are related and, visit 
the library together.
