Poem of the Week

Poetry provides children with rich opportunities to hear the rhythm of
language and develop phonological awareness of sound patterns. And, in our
kindergarten classroom, shared reading of poetry is a daily activity.

Each week students are asked to learn a short poem based on our current unit
of study.  After daily shared readings of the poem and other poetry related
activities, students should be able to recite the poem with the class on
Friday.  At the end of the week, students are given a copy of the poem to
illustrate and place in their own individual poetry books.

This past week our class read the following poem.  We recited this poem
orally in class and discussed rhyming words.  You may wish to recite this
poem again with your child.

The pumpkins, the pumpkins, are all about.
