Sight Words![]() What are "Sight Words"? Sight Words (also called Dolch Words) are 220 of the most frequently used words in the English language. In fact, they make up 50 to 70 percent of any general text. A list of these words was first compiled by Edward William Dolch, Ph.D. in 1948. The list was originally published in his book, Problems in Reading. Dolch compiled the list based on words used in children's reading books in the 1930's and 1940's. The list contains "Sight Words" that must be quickly recognized in order to achieve reading fluency. Many of these words cannot be "sounded out" and have to be learned by "sight," that is, MEMORIZED. Students should instantly recognize these words without having to "figure them out".
Dolch Words are divided into grade levels. Each grade level list can be viewed and printed by clicking on the links at the end of this summary. Since Sight Words are repeated often in books and print, learning these words will help students become more fluent readers and writers. In our kindergarten classroom, we will learn 1 or 2 words per week. Each week these words will be added to a Word Wall in our classroom. This Word Wall is highly visible to students as they work at their tables. Children will be able to refer to the Word Wall while writing in their journals and during other creative writing projects. Each week we will do a variety of activities with our Word Wall Sight Words. We will write them on our dry erase boards, play games with them, look for them in big books, use them in predictable charts, and much more. To date, our kindergarten Word Wall contains the following Sight Words:
