Physical Education Newsletter

Junior high students have been working hard so far in Physical Education. We started the year off with our Presidential Physical Fitness testing. Fall test scores give us an idea of how active students were over the summer, as well as give a baseline for comparing scores in the spring. It is part of our goal in Physical Education to work on activities during the year that will help us improve on these tests. Overall scores have been good. Two areas that we find our students falling short are the stretch test(flexibility) and the pull up test (upper body strength). Unfortunately meeting two times a week does not gives us, or them, ample time to improve on these scores dramatically, but with a little work at home these scores can get better. Encourage your child to work on these activities at home.

After testing the 7th and 8th grade students will be working on skills, participating in lead-up activities, and playing games associated with a few fall sports. The sports we will cover during the first trimester include, Football, Soccer and Volleyball.

Physical fitness is an important part of your child’s well being. Encourage your child to be active. There are many activities they can do on their own to stay fit besides being involved in a sport. Here is a list of just a few:

    Bike Riding            Dancing            Skiing
    Swimming            Board Sports            Jogging
    Martial Arts            Jumping Rope        Hiking
    Obstacle Course        Ice/Inline Skating        Walking

It is estimated that 63% of children are inactive when they reach high school, and obesity has often been called an epidemic, not to mention the financial burden caused. So encourage your kids to put down the remote, game controller or mouse and get out there and get active!
