Social Studies Update

Geography students are preparing for their first test. It will center on the US/Canada unit that we are completing. The students have had a couple of quizzes and are ready to take it to the next level. I have been impressed with the scores on our first map quiz on North America, and I am hopeful that it will carry over to our first test. Geography will then delve into Latin America. With the events currently going on in Honduras, it will be great to put a place to a news story. The coming weeks will also bring a focus on writing, in preparation for our research paper in 2nd trimester!

US History is currently covering the Civil War. I find this to be one of the most important events in US History. The unit helps bring to light many of the issues that would plague our nations history until very recently and in some cases today. I hope that this unit will create an interest in a topic can lead a person to lifetime of learning. Following the Civil War unit, we transition into our unit on the growth of the United States, rapid industrialization, relations with Native Americans, and a changing American role in the world.
