This year we will continue with the same Word Study program for spelling. I did a new assessment of each child at the start of the year to determine the proper place to begin with each child. Your child will be bringing home a weekly collection of spelling words that have been introduced in class. Please return the spelling notebooks to school each day. Here are some suggested activities to do for practice at home. You and your child can decide what to do to prepare for the test on Friday: Monday: Remind your child to sort the words into categories, like the ones we did in school. *Your child should read each word aloud during this activity. *Ask your child to explain to you why the words are sorted in a particular way. *Ask your child to sort them a second time as fast as possible. Tuesday: Do a blind (or no peeking) sort with your child. *Lay down a word from each category as a header and then read the rest of the words aloud to your child. *Your child must indicate where the word goes without seeing it. *Lay it down and let your child move it if he or she is wrong. *Repeat if your child makes more than one error. Wednesday: Assist your child in doing a word hunt. *Look for words in a familiar book that have the same sound, pattern, or both. *Try to find 2 or 3 words that fit into each category. *An alternative activity could be a writing sort, which is also Thursday's activity. Thursday: Do a blind (no peeking) writing sort to prepare for Friday's test. *As you call the words in a random order your child should write them down in the appropriate categories. *Call out any words your child misspells a second or even a third time. Friday: The test will consist of any ten words from the weekly spelling word collection. There is one point for correct spelling and one point for placing the word in the correct category. Thank you for your support! Together we can help your child be successful!
