Bowling Reading Challenge

Dear Parents,

This year the students are going to participate in the Second Grade Bowling Reading Challenge!

I have assessed your child's reading level and wrote the level on your child's book bag.  It is a level that your child is reading fluently and is able to comprehend.  If your child is reading at level L or below, it would best if he/she read the book to an adult.  If you do not feel your child is reading his/her book fluently or understanding what he/she read, have your child reread it again since we are counting minutes, not books.  Rereading a book also helps to build comprehension and vocabulary.

If your child is reading M or above, she/he may read it independently, but I ask that you spot check to see if it is a "just right" book for him or her.  ( Please see the the five finger rule test at the end of this letter.) Also, ask your child questions or have him/her retell you about the individual chapters or book to see if she/he is comprehending and understanding the vocabulary.  You can refer to the list of comprehension questions that was sent home at the beginning of the year.  Encourage your child to ask for help in pronouncing words, understanding vocabulary and meanings of phrases or passages.  It would also be beneficial to sit with your child and read a chapter with him/her once in a while. You can see if she/he is using the right expression, understanding the humor and vocabulary in the story, and is reading fluently and with ease on that particular level.  Reading with your child always builds a better understanding of the story because the both of you can discuss the book together.  It is also a great time to get some one-on-one time with your child.

I have lots of leveled books your child can choose from my library to take home.  Your child can also read other books if you know that it is the level he/she is reading on.

Write the total minutes on the calendar each time your child reads.  The minutes that your child needs to read for the month is marked at the top of the calendar.  It may vary a little from month to month.  Please add up the total minutes before sending the calendar back to school.  When your child finishes the book, complete the information on the book log sheet on the other side, being sure to write the title of the books your child reads and signing your initials.

Your child will need to read the specified minutes for each month of the school year to meet the Bowling Challenge.  Those who meet the goal will be able to go bowling at Strike Force in May with their classmates.

I will be assessing your child's reading level periodically to see how she/he is progressing.  Please feel free to call me if you have any questions about your child's reading.

Thank you for taking care of the books at home and for all the time and support you give your child.  I hope that reading time is enjoyable by all.

A good test for the 5 finger rule:
     1.  Choose any page in the book (Which is at least a paragraph long).
     2.  If your child knows all the words well, it is too easy.
     3.  If your child struggles with 5 or more words, it is too hard.
     4.  If your child struggles with 1-4 words, it is just right.

Happy Reading!
