When the students receive their first set of flash cards, have him/her cut them into flash cards and write the answers on the back. I will give a timed test on their individual cards once or twice a week. Please look for "Study F.C." in your child's assignment book. When your child can complete the test with 100% accuracy within the time limit, he/she will move up to the next level. The students will move up in levels at their own pace. It is really important that students learn their facts so that other operations will come easier for them. They will not have time to count on their fingers. Have your child keep the flash cards in a plastic bag so they can study during commercials, while you're cooking dinner, riding in a car, right before bedtime, etc. Please keep the flash cards even when they have mastered the levels. Later they will have a test with mixed addition and subtraction facts. Every child is expected to master the addition and subtraction facts by the end of the year. The levels and times are as follows: Doubles 45 seconds Doubles Plus 1 45 seconds Addition A sums 0-10 2 minutes Addition B sums 11-18 2 minutes Subtraction A minuends 0-10 2 minutes Subtraction B minuends 11-18 2 minutes Multiplication 2s and 3s 2 minutes Multiplication 4s and 5s 2 minutes Multiplication 2s through 5s 2 minutes Multiplication 6s and 7s 2 minutes Multiplication 8s and 9s 2 minutes Multiplicattion 80 facts 5 minutes We don't learn the concept of multiplication until the second half of the year. However, many students finish their facts before this time and choose to go into multiplication. If your child does choose to go into multiplication, have him/her keep all the levels of the multiplication flash cards. Your child will need to practice all of them at the end. Please understand that second grade students are NOT required to master the multiplication facts.
