| ~~FIFTH GRADE NEWS ~~
In German, the fifth grade is learning how to ask, "How old is your father?" (mother, sister, brother)
and "What is your father’s name?" (mother, sister, brother). We can count up to 99 and can recite the
alphabet in German. Our class is enjoying German because it is an enjoyable class to be in. Our
teacher, Herr Harty is really fun. He teaches us games so we can learn German in a fun way. If we
win, he rewards us with a piece of candy called "sour gummies". He is just an awesome teacher.
German is really fun!

This year for "Reading Counts", if you earned 75 points, you got to go to Dakotah Fitness for the
whole day. We got to use the gym this year. There was volleyball, basketball, racketball, and batting
cages. We also got to use the ice rink and rock wall. The only thing we didn't get to use was the
swimming pool. Next year in sixth grade, we get to use the swimming pool. It was super fun.

In Science, we had a mystery mineral game. We had to do a streak test, color check, hardness scale,
and luster. This information was helpful to us because we had to figure out what type of rock it was.
Some groups used purple guides and others used red. We had a competition of who could get the
most right with the purple books and the red books. There was a competition between both books
because each book had different information. We got rewards if we got the most right.

Youth Teaching Youth teaches us valuable life lessons about important things we need to know in
life, like not doing drugs or drinking beer. We all had to draw a poster about anti-drugs or anti-
alcohol. Whoever has the best poster gets a prize. We also have a question box. If we think of a
question after they leave, we can put it in the box. We watched a movie partly about peer-pressure,
but it was mostly about beer. That is what we learned about drugs and alcohol.

In Social we are learning our states and capitals. It is fun. We do a lot of different activities to learn
them like a puzzle, songs, and flashcards. It's hard so we are in groups. We have already tested on
some of the capitals.

During Drama, we have been working on miming. Our project has to have three animals. You have
to have a couple people be one animal. They are all one animal combined at the end. You will be
the same animal for twenty seconds and switch to another animal until there is a total of three
animals.

This year fifth and sixth grade patrollers got to go to a Minnesota Twins game. Some people didn't
get to go because they didn't sign up for it. Patrolling is when kids have flags and they help kids go
across the street safely. We sat in left field and watched the Twins. We had a great time and the
Twins won.

In Social Studies, we are doing a play about America. We have been practicing for several weeks. We
performed our play for the Art Fair and Grandparents’ Day. It was very fun and we all enjoyed it. On
Grandparent's Day we performed our play and played fun games with our grandparents. We played
math games, interviewed our grandparents, and wrote down memories. We learned a lot about our
grandparents and had a terrific day with them.

This year fifth graders have done Learnia testing. It tests our skill in math and reading. In the
beginning of the year we took the same test. They switch after we do it twice and then after school
they send the scores to our parents. The test is to see how much you've improved since the
beginning of the year. The first one is the easier, but the last got a bit harder. For example, if you
got a 64% on the first one and you got an 80% on the second one, you have improved 16%. Learnia is
almost a state-wide test. That is our information about Learnia.
