Welcome to Mrs. Miller
Second Grade!
Mrs. Miller’s Class Information
Schedule: In second grade, we spend a big part of our morning involved in reading activities and lessons.
The afternoons are usually focused
Science, social studies, math lessons and specials.
Our Specials Schedule IS:
Specials begin at 12:40
Monday: Art
Tuesday: Music
Wednesday: PE
Thursday: Guidance 1:00
Friday: Library
Computer Lab Thursday at 8:30 and Friday at 1:30.
Homework: Your child has a homework folder that will go home every afternoon with any homework assignments they need to complete. Please sign and return the folder each day even if there is not an assignment. This helps to keep them in a routine and excuses are rarely accepted. If the folder is NOT signed, I will assume two things: 1) they either did not finish the assignment(s) and you would not sign it, or 2) they did not bring it home. Your child will receive a mark for not following the directions. There will also be a section for your child's behavior for the day. If you child has a difficult day you will see how many marks your child received. If you child has 3 you will be seeing a letter that should help with the difficulty your child is having. See the classroom rules section.
Homework assignments should not take very long to complete, but they are important for the additional practice and reinforcement of developing skills. These are expected to be returned to school the following day. If homework is not returned, your child will be expected to complete it during recess. Please let me know if you’re ever feeling overwhelmed with homework. It is not my goal to take away your family time.
Reading assignments will be given on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday of each week. Spelling sight words will go home on Mondays and a test will be given on Friday. The weekly spelling assignment will be due on Fridays as well. In math, there may be homework throughout the week except Fridays; however, I usually give the kids time to complete homework in class, so if your child uses his/her time effectively at school, their homework should be kept to a minimum. As part of teaching them responsibility, I require that the folder be signed EVERY night, even if there is no homework!!!!!!!! This helps to keep them used to our routine and excuses are rarely accepted. If the folder is NOT signed, I will assume two things: 1) they either did not finish the assignments and you would not sign it, or 2) they did not bring it home. Either way, they would begin their day by receiving a check mark.
Monday Folders:
New spelling assignment will be sent in a file folder on Monday. Test and work from the week before will also be in the folder. If your child earned a well behaved note it will be in this folder. Please sign on the date and return that folder also. You child will be reward for each signed folder. Spelling should be practiced at home before the test each week.
Team Teaching:
In September Mrs. Crossman will be teaching your child science. I will be teaching her class and mine Social Studies. This has been very successful in the past.

Snacks: Your child has the option of having snack milk every day from the cafeteria. I also allow the children to bring snacks from home during this time. However, it needs to be something quick and easy. (baggie of cereal pieces, crackers, banana, etc.) However if it is your child’s birthday, feel free to make the snack special (cupcakes, donuts, cookies, etc.) for the whole class. It is school policy that all snacks must be store bought instead of homemade. Snack time is at 10:30. Please remember that CJ is a peanut free campus, do to severe food allergies.
Student of the week: Each student will have a week in which they are featured on our “Student of the Week” bulletin board. I will send a note home with your child on the Monday before their turn. They are allowed to bring up to 5 items for Show and Tell during their week. No Toys should be brought to school at any other time.
Lunch/Milk Money: When your child’s account balance reaches $5.00 you will be notified by the lunch department that it is time to send in more money. I do not handle any account information: all lunch money envelopes are sent to the central office. The envelope needs to have your child’s name, my name and the amount enclosed.
Transportation: We want your child to be as safe as possible at school so it is school policy that a note or phone call be made to allow your child to deviate from his/her regular routine. Otherwise, I must send them on the normal route.
Philosophy: I believe that all children CAN behave and that they learn at different levels. Because of my belief, I maintain an orderly environment conductive to student learning. Therefore, my classroom rules and discipline plan are as follows:
Classroom Rules
1. Follow directions quickly.
2. Raise your hand before you speak.
3. Raise your hand before you leave your seat.
4. Make smart choices.
5. Keep your dear teacher happy.

Class rewards
We will also keep track of good behavior for individuals and the whole class. We will have a class Party when we reach our goal. This is something fun, like Pajama Day, Movie Theatre, Game Day, extra recess, etc. This helps the class work together as a team.
2-3 grade Expectation for school rules.
The chart below shows the expectation the 2-3 building has for our children. Make sure to scroll to the right to see the bus rules. If your child receives three checkmarks they will have to visit Mrs. Esser or Mrs. York in the PBS room, more information on that later.

Miscellaneous: Please keep me informed of important things at home that may affect your child’s progress at school (separation, divorce, death of a pet or family member, serious illness, a parent out of town, etc.) By being aware of this, I can better understand their emotional state and offer them additional support.
I know that I have given you a lot of information. Please keep this packet throughout the year so you can refer to it as needed. If you have any questions or concerns, I would be happy to hear from you. You may call me at 649-7034 or email
dmiller@cj.k12.mo.us
I will also put this information on the school website. There is a link to my classroom for you to use as a tool if needed. Communication is an important tool in your child’s education.
Thank you for sharing your child with me. I look forward to getting to know them and you this year!
I also have a Web site:

Mrs. Miller
