At which schools can I choose to tutor students?

Assignments are available at Glendale and any of Glendale's
feeder elementary or middle schools--Bingham, Cowden, Field,
Pershing, Pittman, Hickory Hills, Wilder, or Sequiota. Students
may also indicate " NO PREFERENCE" on their choice of
placement so that they can be placed where the need for help is
greatest.

Must I attend the tutoring assignment each day?

Yes, once an assignment to a particular supervising teacher is
made, you must report every day to that assignment. If you're
traveling off campus, report to the main office to sign in and
out at each session. The SPS Time Clock program is "real time"--we
can see when you clock in and out from the A+ Office at GHS.

Off campus tutors are expected to be in their assigned classroom
at the times discussed in class and printed on the Time Sheets. Time is allotted for travel and for the time it
takes to sign in and out at the main office of the assigned
school. In most instances, tutors will be able to stay longer
than an hour inside the classroom--which will help tutors
accumulate the 25-35 hours needed for their class grade.

What if I'm sick or unable to attend a tutoring session?

You should do three things--1) call your supervising teacher, who
is counting on your being there, 2)clearly mark the absence on
your Tutor Time Sheet and get parent signature, and 3) have your
parent call the GHS Attendance Office to report your absence. I'm
available by e-mail (smaslowsky@spsmail.org) or phone (523-
8954) if you need to contact me for any reason.

Do I choose my own supervising teacher?

Tutors may choose the school, and in some instances, the grade
level of students with which they'd like to work. Tutors are
assigned to classrooms based on submitted teacher requests in the A+ Office.
Students are discouraged from asking to make their own
arrangements, since this often puts teachers in a position in
which they're asked to work with a tutor when it's not
convenient for them. Repeat tutors may not tutor in the same
classroom or with the same teacher they had the first time
they were enrolled in the class.

What do I need to know to do a good job in tutoring other students?

A training/orientation session is held at the beginning of each
term. At the session, forms are passed out and differences in
students and their learning styles are discussed. A make-up
training session for students who enrolled late or were absent is
mandatory. These students will be notified by Mrs. Maslowsky.

Can I tutor a friend after school or in the evening at their house?

Tutors must be supervised by a teacher in an academic setting.
This means that helping a buddy with homework over the phone or
at their house is an honorable gesture, but doesn't qualify for
Tutoring purposes.

Can I choose a coach for a supervising teacher?

Tutoring must involve helping another student with academics.
Non-academic help (coaching, or assisting a teacher with
classroom duties) doesn't qualify. Tutors may help a teacher
with non-academic duties, but shouldn't include that time on
their time sheet.

Are there other ways to get hours in addition to the Tutor class?

Opportunities may exist outside the regular school day, depending
on the time of year and the semester. A current option for
JUNIORS includes summer school tutoring with SPS if the tutor has
already been enrolled once in the Tutor class for training during
the fall or spring semester prior to summer school. Arrangements
must be made and approved with Mrs. Maslowsky IN ADVANCE. Only
tutoring in academic courses, or that portion of the class
involving academic work, will be accepted.

What if the students leave the classroom while I'm there?

If you have a tutor assignment in which the students go to art,
PE, the library, etc. during the time you're assigned to report,
ask the teacher if there's another teacher in the building who can
use you. It's OK for teachers to share A+ tutors.

Do I receive points for parent signatures during the term?

All parent signatures on forms and progress reports are recorded
FOR POINTS. Students who get required signatures and turn them in
on time will receive higher grades than tutors who do not.

What if I 'didn't know' or 'forgot' about requirements of the class?

A basic premise in our society is that "ignorance" of the law
isn't a defense. If an officer stops you for going 50 mph in a
30 mph zone, telling the officer that you "forgot" or "didn't
know" won't get you out of a speeding ticket. It's your
responsibility to read the syllabus, check the web page, and
ask questions so that you know the requirements of the class.
Be responsible and informed!

How do I know if the reports I'm submitting are complete?

The date is stamped on your gold assignment sheet each time work
is turned in. You'll be given only one sheet; it's important
that you don't lose it!
