5th Grade Math
In Chapter 5: Fractions: Addition and Subtraction
, students will:
add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers with like and unlike denominators, includung denominators that are not compatible.
rename the sums and differences of two or more fractions.
In this chapter, students solve everyday problems by adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers. They will also add and subtract mixed numbers with unlike denominators and find sums of three fractions or mixed numbers, renaming addends. A solid facility with the algorithms and an understanding of addition properties will help students in later work with circle graphs and solving problems involving statistics or probability. Facility with the algorithms will be essensial for students' success in later years when they approach simplifying algebraic expressions and solving equations.
The next math test is Friday, Dec. 11.
