- Comment weekly on the storylines of classmates.
- Complete quizzes on selected works.
- Complete a quarter examination.
Item 1: Read all assigned stories and contribute to class discussions
Not much discussion needed... I expect you to read and to contribute. Not reading is a guaranteed recipe for academic disaster. While there are not specific quarter points attached to this item, It will be difficult to do well on Items 2,3,7 & 8 if you do not keep up.
Item 2: Two essays at 100 points each for 200 pts.
The text is divided into five sections. At the end of each section there are several ideas for essays. As each two sections are completed, you will be given a sheet of 4-6 prompt choices for your essay. Traditional essay format will used, and the essays should be from 400 to 600 words in length.(1-2 pgs. typed) Due dates will be given as we near the end of each two sections.
Item 3: Writer's wiki - 100 pts
This will be checked throughout the course of the quarter. Our class Wiki is located at <http://staudeengsymp.pbwiki.com/> and you will be given a class password. You are asked not to share the wiki password with students outside of the course as this is a fairly new type of website.. Your page on the wiki should be title using your last name, first name Ex. Jones, Bill.
You will be expected to make log entries 2 times per week for the first 5 weeks of the course... for a minimum of 10 entries. Each entry is worth 10 points. Each log entry will be 100-150 words in length and will address issues raised in class discussions, outline major structural features of the story under construction, and reflect your personal reactions to the selections.
If you are absent the day of a discussion, it will be your responsibility to find out what was discussed and/or logged for the days you were absent.
Item 4: Original Short Story - 100 pts. - due date 9/23
You will write an original short story. It should be developed throughout the quarter and will be due during the 6th week. The story will be posted at the end of your wiki page for the class and critiqued by them as well as by the instructor. Your progress on the story should be evident in your earlier wiki entries. The story can be of any length but must show evidence of theme development, character development, a conflict, rising action, and resolution.
In addition, appropriate use of mechanics of dialogue, paragraph structure and writing format will be evaluated.
Item 5: Comment weekly on the storylines of classmates - 60 pts.
Beginning with the third week of the quarter and continuing into the 5th week, you are expected to be placing comments onto the short story development pages of classmates. I will be looking at the wiki pages of your classmates to see if you have done so, and giving you credit accordingly. This does NOT have to be extremely time consuming. A minimum of 2 comments on any 2 classmates' stories will suffice. It is important that writers collaborate. You can do more than 2 comments, but that will be your choice.
Item 6 & 7: Quizzes (10pts. each - total of 50pts) and Trimester exam (100pts not part of quarter gr - 33.3% of semester exam.)Trimester Exam 9/24 & 25
The course is not designed to be "test intensive" - however, students should be prepared to take periodic quizzes on reading and class discussions. There will be a trimester exam given at the end of each six weeks. This exam will constitute 10% of the semester exam and will not be factored into the quarter grade. The quarter exam is comprehensive in nature.
