read books written by them and talk about their writing style and/or genre.
 Then we will create special projects that correspond to one or more of their books.

"Where the Wild Things Are"
We make our own "wild things". I drew and cut out monster head shapes and
then traced them onto cardboard to make a sturdier template. I have children choose
which monster template they want and which color construction paper they would like it
to be, then I trace the monster and send them off to cut it out and make the monster's face.
Each child receives a bag of "monster parts" to decorate their monster with (eyes, nose, mouth, teeth, pipe cleaner antennae). Then we do a writing project about when we feel "wild".
