God Project Assigned: August 21/22, 2007 Due September 18/19, 2007
GOAL: Create a visual image, which reflects your personal image or experience
of God.
This must be a project, which is new -- you may not use something that has
been previously made and/or designed for another assignment.
You may use drawings; collage; a combination of words and pictures; or other
forms of visual arts to express your "image" or understanding of God and the
way(s) you experience God. Please do not give me a poster filled only with
words. This is meant to be a visual experience. It is difficult to put the
experience of the God of our understanding into words. You have already done
this with the beginning essay assignments. Now find a visual way to express
your experience of God.
* These may reflect the people, places, things or times, which have brought
the experience of God into your life more clearly. Remember the concept of
"sacred moments" from Sophomore year.
This should be no smaller than an 8" by 11" piece of paper. I would prefer
poster size.
**If you choose to do something other than a poster-type project, such as a
mobile, slide show, video, life presentation, or something totally new, it
must be approved by me within the first week that the assignment is assigned.
This is to insure both of us that you have been given the maximum amount of
time to complete your project well.
* You may use your individual talents to express your experience of God, so if
you are a dancer and want to design a dance to express your experience, you
may do so. Just tell me before hand that this is what you want to do. You
may sculpt, paint, draw, or design something, which expresses your experience.
If you are a musician and can compose and perform your experience that will
work. If you are video wizard or have some other brilliant ideas bring them
to me for approval.
Everyone in the class will see your “God Project.” You do not need to write
anything about it for me. You must be able to explain it to me, privately.
September 18/19, 2007 I will give the class a reading and worksheet assignment
to do, while I meet with each student, individually, to listen to her
explanation of the her project.
***LATE PROJECTS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED WITHOUT PENALTY:
Late assignments will go down one whole letter grade for each day that it is
late. No "A" will be given to a project that is late regardless of the
reason. The project is worth 20% of your final quarter grade.
*It is DUE: At the beginning of Class on September 18/19, 2007.
IT IS CONSIDERED LATE ANYTIME AFTER THIS CLASS PERIOD.
Please inform me, if you need audio-visual equipment for your presentation so
arrangements can be made to get access to the necessary equipment. Remember
this is summer time and the Library is not open.

Guidelines for the News article Assignments.
You are to use the National Catholic Reporter and/or the St. Louis Review to
read and report on one article each week of the Quarter. You should always
use a different week for each report and out of every four articles two should
be from the National Catholic Reporter and two should be from the St. Louis
Review (*the order does not matter). You should never have two articles from
the same week or from the same newspaper for any one week.
The purpose of this assignment is to keep you current with Catholic views on
current issues, so you should not be more than a week or two behind the
current week for the articles that you are reporting on.
These assignments are due each week refer to the dates on the syllabus.
1st: September 24/25, 2007
2nd: October 1/2, 2007
3rd: October 8/9, 2007
Second Quarter: 1st: October 29/30, 2007
2nd: November 26/27, 2007
3rd: December 3/4, 2007
These article reports are based on three things:
(a) The basic information concerning the article: [1] The name of the
Newspaper used;
[2]the date of that newspaper;
[3]the title of the article; the author (**note if no author is listed);
and [4] which article [article # 1., etc.] is this for you.
[5] Your name,
[6]the name of the course,
[7]the date the assignment is due,
and [8] your class period must also appear on the top of this assignment.
Each of these sections will be worth 4 points.
(b) A complete summary of the content of the article.
If you don't understand it, choose one you do understand. This should be a
minimum of one paragraph in length. * Points will be deducted for poor
writing, misspellings, incorrect information and/or insufficient information.
The summary should clearly state what the issue is and what the author has to
say about it.
(c) Please follow the English guidelines that you have been taught. A
paragraph should consist of 3-6 well written sentences. This is the minimum
number of sentences to be used for each of the next two sections -- the
summary of the article and your response/reaction to the information contained
in the article. Section two is worth 33 points.
(d) Your reaction/response to the article.
Points will be deducted for poor writing, misspellings, incorrect
information and/or insufficient information. You should understand what you
are talking about. You should make your point of view clear and offer
evidence to support your opinions. Section three=33 points.
Each section is worth 33 points =99 total.
Needless to say you should write in complete sentences and articulate your
ideas clearly. It should be legible and neat. If you’re unable to write
neatly, please type it.
Please remember and apply William O'Malley's five steps to the process of
thinking:
"1. Gather the data,
2. Sift the data to get the best,
3. Put the data into some kind of logical sequences so that you can
4. Draw a conclusion, and
5. Put that conclusion out to be critiqued." (62, Converting the Baptized)
Also remember O'Malley's description about opinions:
"You're opinion is only as good as the evidence that backs it up." (61)
Reports are due as soon as the newspaper begin being delivered to the library
[They will in our library in multiple copies at the reserve desk.] and will
be due the every week. Please follow the due dates listed below. There will
be no reports due the first and last week of each quarter. If you are in

of this assignment is to help you be responsible for an ongoing assignment.
**You may not use a report from any date earlier than the Week of
August 24, 2007 for First quarter reports. All reports must be from the
current quarter after this date. For second Quarter Reports you may not use
any news from this first quarter, so the earliest report can come from the

class on the day this is assigned. Definitely ask your questions before you
begin interviewing.
***The purpose of this exercise is to learn from others how they experience
God. Please don't pick someone you know does not believe in God, because they
won't be able or comfortable answering the questions. You may interview any
person of Faith; she/he does not have to be Catholic or Christian.
Part I: Ask all people being interviewed the first six questions:
1) Ask each person, "Who is God?" or Please describe your understanding of “God”.
2) "When, where, or how do you experience the presence of a God/ the divine
being / or holy presence in your life?"
3) Ask them: Where they find it easiest to pray, talk to, or be with God.
Explain what the spiritual practices (*example: read scripture, go to
Mass/Service, or retreats) they do to nourish your faith?"
4) Ask them to tell you how they learned about God or who taught them about God?
5) Ask them to share their questions about God and how they found answers to
those questions, which may have been answered at this point in their lives.
6) Ask them if they know when they first believed in God; or when they stopped
believing (whichever one applies to the individual you are speaking with.)?
The remaining questions are only for all the teens and adults:
7) "What role does faith play in your life?" or How does your belief in God
influence your life?
8) "What values or religious beliefs do you cherish and why are these values
important to you?"
9) " In what ways do your religious beliefs challenge you in your daily life?"
10) "How would you describe your involvement in the Catholic Church? Why are
you Catholic? How long have you been Catholic?” (If they are a member of a
different faith, substitute the name of that faith; if they used to be
Catholic but are no longer Catholic, ask why they are no longer a Catholic?)
11) Ask them to complete the following sentence, " A Christian is...." [This
should be asked regardless of their faith or religion.]
12) In your opinion, what makes someone Catholic? How do you believe faith in
God and membership in the Church are related?
13) Ask them to describe or explain their image and experience of the
Church/faith community.
14) Ask them if they can describe the person(s) who have helped them most to
be a Christian/ or member of their religion.
**This last question is for the sixth person—the person who is a convert to
Catholicism.
15. Please explain why he or she chose to be Catholic.
Part II: Write a paragraph for each person interviewed which describes
your reaction to that individual person's responses to the questions in part
one above.
**Note that you will write a separate reaction for each individual not one for
all interviews.
Please remember that all answers should be numbered to match the question they
are the response to. They should be listed in order for each person. Example
Nine year old male
1. answer
2. answer
3. answer, etc. after the last answer
Your reaction to this interview should be written.
