Dear Parents,

This week we received a special guest in our room.  We now have an Elf on a Shelf.  If your child has not already told you about him, his name is Rico and he is going to stay with us through the Christmas season.  He is watching the children to see if they are being naughty or nice during the school day and reporting back to Santa with what he sees. Here is what we worked on this week:

During Religion class, we are wrapping up on the different things we need to know for our First Reconciliation that we have on Saturday.  We practiced what we say when the priest welcomes us in.  We went over the steps of Reconciliation and everyone knows the Prayer of Sorrow.  Father Bryon took us on a tour of the Reconciliation rooms in church. We practiced exactly what will happen during Reconciliation (hopefully this will help ease some nerves!). I think we are all ready for our First Reconciliation and I know that we are all very excited.

In Reading class this week we read There's Nothing Like Baseball. The story is about a girl who is trying out for a baseball team and how her and her friend really want to be short stop.  We worked on reading with expression, especially sentences that end with question marks.

For Grammar we reviewed our possessive and plural nouns.  The students did great with them and everyone is really catching on.

This week in Social Studies, we read about the Pilgrims and Native Americans.  We all made tepees that have pictographs on them that tell something about each student.  These turned out great.  In our reading we also discussed some explorers like Christopher Columbus and how some of us would like to be explorers like him.  There are also some other students that would not like to be explorers and we discussed why they would or would not want to be one.  The students recipes are due on Monday, December 7th.  Please email them to me once they are typed up. I have gotten some great recipes so far and they all sound delicious.

This week in Spelling our words consisted of the long o sound. We have learned all sorts of ways that letters make the long o sound: o, oe, ow. Please continue to study words each night. One helpful strategy may be to study the first 7 words one night, then 8 the next night.

In math this week, we continued to work on geometry. We learned about solid shapes like cubes, spheres, square pyramids, rectangular prisms, cones, and cylinders. We used the shapes a lot during class, and even discussed what plan shapes make up the solid shapes (squares, triangles, circles, and rectangles). We identified faces, edges, and vertices of each solid shape. Timed tests from now until Christmas will remain addition, and will just be cumulative of all the facts up to 12+12. PLEASE continue to study the facts. Just 5-10 minutes a night could make a huge difference.

Don't forget to order books for Christmas! Did you know that when you order books, our classroom library also gets free books? Just go to www.scholastic.com/bookclubs. Our username is MissCochran2b and the password is sgm2b. It's really easy!

Please send in a wrapped shoebox and lid by next Friday.
