Second Grade, Second Quarter
RELIGION
During the first weeks we will complete our preparation for First Reconciliation. We will also celebrate the Advent and Christmas seasons.
READING/PHONICS
This quarter we will analyze characters, discuss cause and effect, sequence events and summarize stories. Our phonics lessons will emphasize reading words with dipthongs, digraphs, and r-controlled vowels. We will begin to assign monthly book reports to provide practice in skills taught in class. Please continue to encourage daily, independent reading.
MATH (Taught by Miss Cochran)
This quarter in math we'll wrap up our study on place value and number patterns and move into geometry and fractions. We'll learn about shapes, angles, and congruency. We'll also recognize and write, as well as compare fractions. Timed tests will continue to be given on a weekly basis.
SPELLING
Our spelling lessons continue as usual. We will also continue to add and study words on our Word Wall, our display of words second graders need to spell in daily work and writing projects. The children use it for reference when writing.
ENGLISH
In English we will differentiate plural and possessive nouns, practice using adjectives in descriptive writing, and identify present and past tense verbs.
HANDWRITING
We are starting to learn cursive handwriting. The children will learn how to properly form and slant letters. As we learn lower case letters, we will connect them to form words. We will not write schoolwork in cursive until the last quarter.
SOCIAL STUDIES (Taught by Mrs. Guntli)
We will begin the quarter with a study of geography. Then we will begin to study American history. Topics will include Native Americans, explorers, colonists, and the American Revolution. Students will learn how to read timelines.
SCIENCE (Taught by Mrs. Guntli)
This quarter in science, second graders will wrap up our study of life science and move into learning about earth science. We will learn about land, air, water and natural resources. In addition, we will study weather and the changing seasons. Fossils and dinosaurs will also be introduced during the second quarter.
