2A News

Dear Parents,

We had a great week in 2A! Did you know that we still practice classroom procedures? We are getting really good at making smooth transitions between activities, lining up quietly, and moving quietly throughout the hallways. We have worked hard to know what's expected of us!

During Religion class, we are continuing to prepare for First Reconciliation. We examined our conscience and asked ourselves questions like, "Did I lie to my parents? Did I follow the rules? Was I nice to everyone? Do I obey my parents and teachers?" We also still say the Prayer of Sorrow everyday. We are doing a great job at getting it memorized. Please continue to say the prayer at home also so that your child is fully prepared for the big day! Before First Reconciliation, we will practice exactly what will happen during the Sacrament. We will also go on a tour of the priests' reconciliation rooms. Only 2 more weeks!

In Reading class this week we read Farfallina and Marcel. It was a cute story about a caterpillar and a baby goose who become friends. Ask your child what happens to the caterpillar and the goose in the story!
We also finished up Charlotte's Web. The students did such a great job following along in our own books while I read it out loud. Each day we discussed the setting of the chapter, the main characters, and important language (words we didn't know before). We also extensively discussed the main idea in each chapter. These are all great story elements to discuss with your child as they read to you at home.

For Grammar we learned about possessive nouns. We put apostrophes in words that needed them and took them out of words that didn't need them. We will continue to work with possessive nouns throughout the year.

This week in Science we made food webs.  We learned that a food web is made up of many food chains.  We also learned about producers and consumers.  See if your child can name a producer or a consumer.  I bet that they can even name a predator and prey.  I think that the students enjoyed learning about how plants and animals work together and how one can not live without the other.  We even had a quiz this week because we learned so much!

This week in Spelling our words consisted of the long i sound. We have learned all sorts of ways that letters make the long i sound: y, i_e, igh, and sometimes just i. Please continue to study words each night. One helpful strategy may be to study the first 7 words one night, then 8 the next night.

In math this week, we continued to work on geometry. We learned a lot of new big words: quadrilateral, parallelogram, rhombus, trapezoid, hexagon, pentagon, congruent, and symmetry. There will be a math test on Tuesday. There will be NO timed test on Wednesday. However, timed tests from now until Christmas will remain addition, and will just be cumulative of all the facts up to 12+12. PLEASE continue to study the facts. Just 5-10 minutes a night could make a huge difference.

Thank you to everyone who was able to bring in their Flat Stanley. We LOVED reading about his adventures all over the country (and Europe!) and seeing pictures of places he went. From the look of it, all of the Stanley's had a great vacation! Be sure to check out our bulletin board in the hallway of Flat Stanley's adventures if you're in school over the next few weeks. If your Stanley hasn't come back, just bring him in whenever he does!

Looking ahead:
Tues. 24th - Math test
Wed. 25th - Grandparents Day!

***********************OLD PUZZLES NEEDED****************************
We would like your donation of your old puzzles that may have lost the pieces.  Now that Little Friends of Jesus has moved into the school day we have been doing projects and activities with our 8th grade buddies.  For December we would like to make a craft for the retirement home that are made out of puzzle pieces.  If you have any laying around that you don't need anymore.  Please send them in!  Thank you so  much!

Have a great weekend!
