Quarter Letter

Grade 5
Second Quarter Letter
2009-2010

LANGUAGE ARTS
~READING
"Building Bridges" is the reading theme of Unit Two. The stories in this unit explore the theme of
knowing what we have in common and helping us appreciate our differences. Skills covered are making
predictions, finding main ideas, and recognizing facts. We will continue reading and participating in Lit
Circles. Students will continue to read independently as part of their reading grade. Each fifth grader
will track the progress of his/her independent reading goal of 1,000 pages per quarter. (We can adjust
this goal for your child if it is a problem.) Please check this log periodically to be sure that your child is
working towards the goal.

~SPELLING
Homophones, compound words, and words with a final /l/ or /ei/ will be studied. In addition, words
with patterns (vccv), (vcccv), and Lifetime Words will be learned.

~ENGLISH
Currently, we are studying pronouns as well as practicing writing How-To articles. This skill will come
in handy when we write the procedures for carrying out the Science Fair projects.

MATH
Students will continue to practice dividing whole numbers. Fraction theory will be explored as students
prepare to add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers. Timed computation tests on multiplication
and subtraction facts will be given periodically.

SCIENCE
Our young scientists have chosen their experiment that they will conduct for this year's SGM Science
Fair. All work will be completed here at school! When we are not working on Science Fair projects we
will continue our study of Physical Science.
