Behavior, Homework, and Grading

                    GRADE 5 BEHAVIOR,HOMEWORK, and GRADING

BEHAVIOR
Students in the intermediate grades are held to a high standard of behavior.
Respect for self and others is stressed. We believe our policy stresses the
importance of self-discipline, is age-appropriate, and child-centered.
Students track and monitor their behavior by receiving three tokens
to keep in their desk. Students will lose a token when there is a rule
infraction. Students are usually given a verbal warning before a token is
lost. Weekly progress reports will reflect student behavior
for the week. When three tokens are lost, the student will conference with
Dr. Koberlein. Serious rule infractions will result in implementation of the
all school discipline policy. (See handbook.) All students will start the
week with three tokens - a fresh start!

GRADING
The goal of assignment completion is that student work be of high quality
and as error free as possible. Assignments in all content areas will be
assessed with regard to neatness, grammar, language mechanics, spelling, and
legibility. At least 10 points will be deducted per day that an
assignment is late. Any assignment that is still missing on Monday will
receive no credit. These assignments will be listed on your child's weekly
progress report each Friday. Illness, family emergencies, and other
circumstances will be taken into account. Points will also be deducted for
an incorrect heading on the assignment.

HOMEWORK
Students will keep track of all assignments in their notebooks. These are
kept on their desks throughout the day. Students are required to write down
the assignments as they are given. About 45-60 minutes of homework will be
assigned each night. (Weekends will be lighter!) By fifth grade,
students should be completing their homework as independently as possible.
They may still need assistance in checking over and proofreading their work.
Students should be studying for tests on their own. Study skills are
taught in the classroom to practice at home. When they are finished studying
it is then appropriate for a parent to quiz or review with the student.
If you notice your child struggling to complete homework, please call. We
can work on strategies to solve these problems. Let's work together!
Also, please remember that sports in not an acceptable reason for not
completing homework.

HONOR ROLL
Students in grade 5 are eligible for the SGM Spirit and Cooperation level
of Honor Roll. To achieve this, students may have no more than 6 late
assignments during the quarter, or no more than 2 late assignments in any
one subject. A student may not have any "needs improvement" conduct comments
in order to be eligible for Honor Roll.
