4th Grade Second Quarter Letter

Welcome to 2nd Quarter! Mrs. Kitsch and Mr. Hoskins feel the first quarter
was a success. The students learned new and exciting ideas and concepts.
Below is some information on what the 4th grade will be learning this
quarter.

Religion

We are starting Unit 2 in the Blest Are We text. We will be learning more
about Jesus. We will also be discussing the meaning of Baptism. We will
learn the Beatitudes and how we can live the Beatitudes today. During
December, we will focus on the Advent season as we prepare for the birth of
Jesus. The students will continue to have tests after each chapter and unit.
We will continue to prepare our study guides with the emphasis on how to
look up information in our books as a study skill. Please continue to review
for tests from this valuable tool.

Science

We will be finishing Earth Science and starting Physical Science this
quarter. Students will study different ways the Earth's surface changes and
how we use our natural resources. In Physical Science, students will study
Properties of Matter and Heat.

Math

In math we are learning operations, algebraic reasoning, and solving problems
using skills and strategies, as we continue
to master our multiplication and division facts. The students are
continuing timed tests three times a week. Please continue to practice math
facts at home, 2 through 12. Also, have your child go to my math links
section of my web page to play math games. (Who would have thought that a
teacher would ask their students to play games for homework?). What a great
way to review math. Please continue to sign and return their timed tests.
Don't forget that you can go to my web page for homework and if they forget
to bring home their math workbook you can go to the web site to down load
their homework page. Then have them bring the page to school and I'll
staple it to their workbook page.

Reading

We have begun Unit 2 in our Reading book, Something in Common. Our topic
this unit is sharing common ideas. More projects and writing pieces will
continue this quarter. We will continue working on vocabulary and
comprehension. Unit 3 stories will focus on using our talents and
communicating ideas.

Spelling

Words with vowel sounds will be studied as well as compound words. Words
ending in er, l, el, and ed will also be covered. Students will continue to
have weekly tests.

English

We are continuing in Chapter 2 of our English book. In this chapter we will be
studying different types of nouns. We will be working on pronouns and formal
letters, as we continue to work on our writing skills.

Social Studies

During the second quarter in Social Studies, we will focus on Our State
Today and then move on to the Growth and Change. During this time, the
students will first focus on our state in the present. Then we will move
into how our state has grown and changed. Students will work in small
groups to create projects to show their understanding in the topic.

We are looking forward to an exciting and productive second quarter!
