Second Quarter Letter
2009-2010

LANGUAGE ARTS
~READING
We have begun Theme 2 "Building Bridges." The stories in the unit explore the theme 
of knowing what we have in common with others to help us appreciate our
differences. Skills covered are making predictions, finding main ideas, and
distinguishing between facts and nonfacts.
We will continue reading novels in Literature Circles. Students will also
read 1,000 pages this quarter in independent reading.

~SPELLING
We will study homophones, compound words, and words with /l/ or /el/ 
endings. Words with the patterns (vccv) and (vcccv) will be studied.
Students will continue to learn the definitions for 10 of the list words 
each week.
~ENGLISH
Unit 2 will cover pronouns. We will identify person, case, and possession.
In Unit 3 we will look at adjectives.
We will continue to write creatively while composing more personal narratives, and 
how-to articles, and stories.

RELIGION
As we move into Unit 2, we will begin an in-depth look at two of the 
sacraments of Initiation-Baptism and and Confirmation. Students 
will explore how these sacraments welcome us and strengthen our faith.
Symbols and rituals will be studied. We will also be thinking about
the meaning of the Advent season through prayer, service, and reflection 
as we prepare for the feast of Christmas.


SOCIAL STUDIES~ We have moved from the pre-Columbian western hemisphere 
to the eastern half of the world. We will explore reasons for European
exploration and the conquest and colonization of North American.
In January, we will study our economy and free enterprise system as we 
prepare for our trip to Junior Achievement BizTown in early February.
