Quarter 2 Letter/Grade 6



READING

Our study of short stories will take the concepts of character, setting, and theme. 
Creative writing assignments will apply these concepts, as well as use the vocabulary from the stories to show students' understanding. Students are expected read 1000 pages outside class assignments and should record them regularly on their reading logs. 

ENGLISH

Journal writing and proofreading skills will be incorporated into every class. Grammar concepts to be covered are recognition of sentence parts and correct sentence structure. Formatting paragraphs correctly with topic sentences, supporting sentences, and conclusion will be a focus in reading as well as English in preparation for the five-paragraph essay format used to write a research paper during the third quarter  Our review of parts of speech will include prepositions, conjuctions, and interjections. Students will take a semester exam in December.

SPELLING/VOCABULARY

Lessons have words that are centered around theme-based meanings. Students are responsible for word meaning as well as correct spelling. There will be a review test every two lessons testing understanding of word meaning and correct usage in sentences..
