What should I do if my child is sick?
When your child is sick, please notify the school office and let
them know whether we should send homework home with a sibling or
a friend or whether you will pick it up in the school office. We
understand that your child has been sick and may not quite be up
to completing it all in one night, but would ask that they
complete it in a couple of days so that your child does
not miss any key concepts.
How do Scholastic Book Orders work?
Every month we will send home a Scholastic book order form. If
you choose to purchase books, please return your order by the due
date listed on the form. Please make your check payable directly
to "Scholastic Books". We mail early in the morning on the due
date! Orders are usually delivered in about 2 weeks.
What is the best way to contact the teacher?
Communication between home and school is essential. If you have
any questions, comments or concerns, please contact me. I can be
reached by voicemail at (314) 822-8844 Ext. 407 or e-mail at
jmissel@sgmschool.org
How are discipline issues handled?
We have a red, yellow, green stoplight discipline program that we
use to encourage good behavior. If a child is well behaved, they
will be in a green status(Green = great job!) If a child is not
following our rules, we will give them several warnings. If the
behavior continues after the warnings, their status changes to
yellow(Yellow = oops!) If they are in yellow status and continue
the behavior, they are in red status. (Red = Let's talk!) If a
child goes into the red area, that means they have not improved
or have not made an effort to follow the rules. We will
be talking to them but feel that at this point, you would want to
know so that you can follow up at home. We will be sending home
a form that will inform you of the behavior that needs to be
addressed, and we ask that you sign the form and return it to
school. With home and school working together, the problem
can be corrected.
What is the homework policy?
We will assign homework approximately three times a week. It
will be stamped HOMEWORK and should be returned the next day
unless otherwise noted. Spelling words will be posted a month in
advance and words will be posted on this website in the SPELLING
WORDS icon. The spelling lists have a "week of" date so that you
will know which words will be learned that week. It will also
list the spelling test dates.
Spelling words should be reviewed on a nightly basis.
What is a "blue go home" folder?
All notes, homework and completed papers will be sent home in
this special folder on a daily basis. PLEASE EMPTY THIS FOLDER
EVERY DAY! Go through all completed papers. If you should find an
error, please feel free to go over it with your child. Praise
your child for their efforts. Keep all completed papers at home
unless otherwise noted. You may use this "blue go home
folder" to send homework back to school or to send any notes
to us.
What is a DOL?
A DOL is a written activity that we do every morning when we
arrive. It is a worksheet that includes math activities, grammar
activities, money, clocks, patterns, graphing and many other
activities. You will see this come home every day. When the
student arrives in the morning, he/she picks up a DOL and works
on it independently while everyone is arriving and getting
settled. After most students have finished, we go over
it orally and the children are instructed to make corrections. If
a paper comes home correct, please understand that it has been
corrected by your child in class. A few of the concepts are
above the first grade level. These are not taken for a grade but
we love the "exposure" that it gives the students even
though we are not expecting mastery. Often it provides practice
with a skill on a daily basis, rather than just touching on it
when it occurs in our books. For example, since we work on clocks
and money every day, when we reach those chapters in our math
books, we find it very easy since we have been learning it every
day. The children like doing them and look forward to the
challenge!
What is a color day?
A color day is an out of uniform day. Sometimes, Dr. Koberlein
will grant a color day for a particular grade or the entire
student body. Specific guidelines for out of uniform attire are
published in the Parent Handbook.
How are birthdays celebrated?
In 1B, birthdays are a special occasion! Birthday children are
granted a color day, given a crown and sticker to wear, their
name will be announced on KSGM-TV during our local news broadcast
and we will acknowledge their special day by singing "Happy
Birthday"! On that day, your child will be allowed to move their
desk and "sit by a friend" for the day! If your child
has a summer birthday, we will also notify you on what day your
child will celebrate his/her half birthday. Sometimes this might
vary as a previous color day may have already been scheduled on
your child's true half birthday and we want your child to be
recognized on their own "special day". Birthday treats are not
allowed.
What is a Special Lunch?
An APT Special Lunch is provided once a month. Food is brought in
from Domino's, Subway or other food establishments. This is not
part of the regular lunch program and must be purchased
seperately. Details and order forms for the scheduled lunch will
come home in the parent newsletter that Dr. Koberlein sends home
each week.
