Dear Parents,
Happy New Year! I hope you all had a restful and enjoyable break. This
week, we will be talking about New Years resolutions and how we can make
changes that can improve our health, attitudes and lives. It should be fun to
see what we will be working on in this new year!
This week in our reading story, we will be working on triple blends (str,
scr, spl). As you read with your child, see if they can find any of these
blends in their reading. Also, see if they can spot any smaller words inside
the bigger ones ("rub" in scrub etc). This will help in learning how to
decode larger words.
In math, we will be finishing up our unit with fractions and probability.
Cooking is a great way to learn fractions. Maybe you can let your child help
read a recipe and cook a meal. This will help them get a "visual" idea of
fractions and which is larger and which is smaller. Many children think 1/4
is bigger than 1/2 because 4 is larger than 2. That is where cooking comes in
handy because your child can see the difference. As a bonus, you might even
get the night off from cooking!
ATTENTION ALL MYSTERY READERS!! Today, I will be sending home a new
mystery reader sign-up sheet for the rest of the school year. PLEASE RETURN
THIS NO LATER THAN JANUARY 8, 2010! I will be sending a new schedule home
this Friday!
As always, please contact me if you have any questions or concerns. Have
a great week!
Sincerely,
Julie Missel
