I am beginning my 11th year at Majella. I hold an AB in Elementary Education with a specialization in
Art, History, and Philosophy. I have an M.Ed. as a Reading Specialist. I treasure those creative
encounters in the happy, charged environment of the students searching, discovering, and creating
in the art room. These experiences have enriched and colored my life.
Studying art leads to obtaining a store of images that are the foundation for much of our
understanding, including the images at the base of much of our language and poetry. As part of
general education art provides one set of the lenses or structures that we think with. Problem-
solving in the art class develops higher level thinking skills. The study of art promotes creativity,
self-esteem, and self-expression.
Art Instruction includes four disciplines:
Aesthetics-questions and theories
Art Criticism-writing and talking about art
Art History-images and and timelines are used to build a framework for styles
Art Production-techniques for expression
