About The Teacher
¡Bienvenidos! Welcome! It's hard to believe I am beginning my fifth year teaching Spanish at St. Gerard Majella School. Better known to your children as Señora, my name is Mrs. Dodie Weckback. As an educator I've worked with students in Kindergarten through eighth grade, and taught nearly all subject areas, sharing my knowledge of Spanish in some capacity throughout most of my twenty- three year teaching career. My favorite passtimes include spending time with family and friends, reading, and working in the yard. I love animals, especially frogs, hampsters, and our dog, Sadie. As always I look forward to spending another fun and exciting year with your children, expanding our Spanish vocabulary and knowledge of the language, as well as, opening our eyes to the wonders of our great and diverse world.

Mission
Learning a second language is not just learning grammar and vocabulary. It is learning new sounds, expressions, and different ways of seeing the world. Research shows that knowledge of other languages boosts a student's understanding of languages in general and enables him/her to use English more effectively. Studying a foreign language develops mental flexibility, creativity, and higher order thinking skills, such as problem-solving, conceptualizing, and reasoning. As a result students often score higher in reading, language arts, and math tests. The study of cultural values and belief structures helps dissolve misconceptions and prejudice, while creating trust and empathy. Learning another language opens up new opportunities and gives a student perspectives that he/she might never encounter otherwise. It teaches the student how to act in another culture, gives a better understanding of his/her own culture, and shows how others view our way of life. Learning Spanish leads to the acquisition of important life skills, making the student better equipped to adapt and cope with an ever-changing world. It can help your child to more fully appreciate and understand the world in which we live.
