Quarter Test

1.	 In the second chapter of Genesis God created a man, Adam, and put him in
the Garden of Eden.

2.	God also created animals and brought them to Adam to name.

3.	Adam was still lonely.   God then took a rib from Adam’s side while he was
sleeping and out of it formed a companion for Adam.  Adam called his
companion, Eve.

4.	In the Garden was a certain tree.  God told Adam and Eve not to eat the
fruit of this tree.

5.	A Serpent entered the Garden and pressured Eve to eat the fruit.  The
Serpent said that God told them not to eat the fruit because God knew if they
did they would be like God.

6.	Eve believed him and ate the fruit and offered some to Adam who also ate
the fruit.

7.	Later that day God entered the Garden.  Adam and Eve hid from God because
they were afraid and because they were naked.

8.	 Adam and Eve left the Garden.  They had two sons,  Cain and Abel.  When
they became adults, Cain killed Abel.  Later Eve had another son.  He was
called Seth.

9.	Adam and Eve blamed the Serpent for their misfortunes instead of
understanding that it was through their own actions that they lost their home
in the Garden of Eden.

10.	Abram was called by God to leave his home in Ur and travel to a new land.

11.	Because Abram believed in him God made a covenant with Abram.  He told
Abram he would give him many descendants and make a great nation out of these
descendants.

12.	Abram had two sons, Ishmael was born first. His mother was Hagar.

13.	Because God gave Abram a new life, he also gave him a new name.  That name
was Abraham.  He changed Sarai’s name to Sarah which means “princess.”

14.	One day Abraham had visitors and they told him that Sarah would have a
son.  Sarah was ninety when Isaac was born.

15.	After Isaac was born Sarah became jealous of Hagar and told Abraham to
send Hagar and Ishmael out into the desert.  She was afraid that Ishmael would
inherit some of Abraham’s wealth.  She wanted it all for Isaac.

16.	 One day God told Abraham to go up to the mountain with Isaac.  God said
he would provide what was to be sacrificed.  When they got to the top of the
mountain God told Abraham to build an altar and to tie Isaac to it because
Isaac was the sacrifice.  Abraham did as God said because he loved God very
much and trusted God completely.

17.	When Sarah was very, very old she died.  Abraham went to the Hittites and
bought their best piece of property, Machpelah Cave, in which to bury Sarah.

18.	Abraham’s faith was marked by personal trust, risk, times of darkness and
doubt.

19.	 Abraham made an unbreakable covenant with God.  A covenant is an
unconditional promise of faithfulness.

20.	When sealing a covenant when Abraham was alive, the two. parties walked
between an animal which had been split in two halves.

21.	Sarah was the first barren women that we meet in the Scriptures. Later we
will meet others, like Rachel and Elizabeth.

22.	The culture of Abraham’s time looked down on any woman who could not have
children.  Sarah felt very ashamed that she could not have a child.

23.	When Isaac grew up he married Rebecca.  They had twin boys and named them
Esau (the older) and Jacob (born last).

24.	Esau sold his birthright to his brother Jacob for a bowl of stew. 
Eventually Jacob also received Isaac’s blessing…a blessing that could not be
taken back.

25.	Jacob had a dream at Bethel.  In his dream he saw angels going up and down
a staircase.

26.	Jacob lives with his uncle Laban for 14-15 years and marries two of
Laban’s daughters, Leah and Rachel.  Rachel has a difficult time becoming
pregnant.

27.	Jacob decides to seek reconciliation with his brother Esau.  On the
journey back to Esau’s camp…one night, a man came to him and starts to wrestle
with him.  They wrestle all night long.  Jacob thought the man was God.  He
was correct and God changed Jacob’s name to Israel.

28.	Because there was so much love in Esau’s face when he saw his brother for
the first time in 20 years, Jacob told him that “…seeing your face is like
seeing the face of God.”

38.	How is Jesus Christ present in the sacramental life of the Church?  Write
a short prayer of thanksgiving for what Jesus has given you in the sacraments.

Jesus Christ is always present in the Church’s sacramental life.  For example,
we are united with Christ in Baptism and become members of his Body, the Church.
In Confirmation we receive grace from the Holy Spirit that strengthens us in
being Jesus’ disciples.  In the Eucharist . we receive the Body and Blood of
Jesus as our spiritual food.

39.	Why was the Council of Jerusalem assembled and what was its conclusion?

The Council of Jerusalem was assembled to deal with the question of whether
Gentiles had to first follow the Mosaic Law before becoming Christians.  Jews
who had converted argued that Gentiles had to first follow the Mosaic Law. 
The disciples, Paul, Barnabas, and the apostles, Peter and James, said that
everyone could come directly to Christianity.  This was the final decision.

40.	List 2 ways that a Catholic parish can imitate the early Christian community.

Possible Answers:  Accepting people from other religions; treating all people
with respect; praying for one another; worshiping together.

41.	Explain what St. Paul meant when he said that as members of Christ’s Body,
we have one Lord, one faith, and one Baptism.

St. Paul said that the Body of Christ is made up of many members with
different talents and strengths.  What unites them into one Body is the
sharing of the same Lord as their Redeemer and God; the sharing of the same
belief in Jesus as God; the sharing of the same Baptism, which made them all
members of the Body.

42.	Why is the Lord’s Prayer considered to be a prayer for unity?

The Lord’s Prayer is the prayer Jesus taught us; all are called to pray as
Jesus prayed;  all Christians have been praying the Lord’s Prayer since the
earliest days.
