Analysis

Spring 2012

MAT400 Section 02

Course Description:
Analysis is a pre-calculus course that explores the algebra of real and complex numbers, analytic geometry and trigonometry. There is significant emphasis placed on polynomial, exponential, trigonometric and logarithmic functions. Other topics include limits as applied to functions, as well as derivatives, conic sections, logarithms, natural logs and statistical analysis. This is an applications based course that provides the skills necessary for success in college level mathematics courses. You are expected to exhibit a level of mastery that will demonstrate your ability to use, apply and adapt your knowledge. Your performance will be assessed using numerical, algebraic, graphical and verbal methods.

Course Objectives:
 To extend the students mathematical knowledge beyond the basic secondary level in preparation for college level calculus.
 To assist students in becoming independent thinkers and problems solvers by trying new or different methods of problem solving.
 To guide students in developing thinking skills such as reasoning, analysis, interpretation, application, perception and synthesis.
 To help students in making mathematical connections with other subject areas, math courses and real-world situations.

Classroom Behavior:
 Show respect for yourself and everyone else in the classroom.
 Be responsible for your work and your required class materials.
 Give your very best effort every day.
 Behave appropriately in the classroom setting.
 Under the electronic devices and the cheating policies addressed in the student handbook, use of cell phones during class is prohibited.

Ensuring Your Success:
 Pay attention in class.
 Keep all notes, homework, quizzes and tests in an organized manner.
 Ask questions.
 Study for tests.
 Do your homework.

Grading System:
Grades are determined by a combination of tests, projects, quizzes, homework, classroom assignments and comprehensive final exam (not to exceed 20% of total grade). Grades are based on the total points earned divided by total points available, points are cumulative and the final grade is based on the final percentage.

Required Materials:
Textbook: Precalculus: Graphical, Numerical, and Algebraic. Graph paper.
Pencils and erasers. TI-83/84 graphing calculator.
Plastic expandable pocket folder is best.
