Marathon, a place in Greece, 22 miles NE from Athens, where a great battle
was fought between the Persians and Athenians, BC 490. An Athenian soldier
ran, without stopping from the battlefield to Athens, with news that the
Persians were defeated. The Marathon race originated as a long distance foot
race as a test of endurance open to all comers at the first Olympic Games in
Athens 1896.
