Chapter 3
 Lesson 1
  1. Public Service- Work done to help the community
  2. Common Good- Something that is good for everyone in a community
  3. Volunteer- A person who chooses to work without being paid
  4. Elect- To vote for, or choose, a leader
  5. Appoint- To choose for a government without voting
  6. Authority- The right of a leader to give orders, make decisions, or
                take action
 Lesson 2
  7. Conflict- A disagreement
  8. Court- A place where a judge decides whether a person has broken the
            law, and, if so, what the consequences will be
  9. Jury- A group of people usually six to twelve citizens who sit in a
           courtroom and listen to the facts of a case
  10.Public Property- Property, such as a park or swimming pool, that
                      belongs to everyone in the community
  11.Private Property- Property, such as a home, business, or farm, that
                        belongs to one person or a group of people

  12.Compromise- A way to settle a conflict in which each person gives up
                 something of what he or she wants
  13.Mediator- A person who helps both sides settle a disagreement

  14.Government Service- Work that is done for a city or town by departments
                         run by the government
  15.Recreation- An activity, hobby, or sport done for enjoyment
  16.Public Works- A department that provides services such as garbage
                   collection for a community
  17.Tax- The money the government collects from citizens to pay for the
          services they need
  18.Property Tax- A tax paid by people who own land and buildings in the
                   community
  19.Sales Tax- Extra money that people must pay to support government
                services each time they buy something
  20.Council- A group of citizens chosen to make decisions for a community

  21.Legislative- The branch of government that makes new laws
  22.Executive- The branch of government, led by a mayor, governor, or
                President, that sees that the laws are obeyed
  23.Judicial- The branch of government that decides whether laws are fair
               and whether they have been fairly carried out 
  24.County Seat- The city or town in which the county’s leaders meet
  25.Parish- The name given to local governments in the state of Louisiana
             by the Roman Catholic Church while the region was under Spanish
             rule
  26.Governor- The elected leader of  a state’s government
  27.Capital- Money used to start or add to a business

  28.Boundary-Another word for border
