I got a note that a grade will be taken for AR. How will that grade be calculated?
At the end of the 9-weeks, the number on the bottom of the student record report (%correct) and the percentage of their goal met will be averaged together. That will be taken for one reading grade.Back to Top
Can my child read all .5 pt books to reach his goal?
Your student accumulates points for each test that he/she passes. The student needs to accrue a certain number of points based on his/her color. On pink dot and up, a chapter book must also be read each 3-week period to meet the goal. If a student reads all picture books on colors pink and up, the goal will not be met regardless of points.Back to Top

Can my student read and test on only one color?
The student was assigned his "color" based on past reading performance on the STAR test - a reading level assessment test, and past performance on AR tests. It is good for them to practice on a level that challenges them, but is not too difficult. Non- fiction books are the exception. They may read "down" one color on non-fiction.Back to Top
How many points is each book worth?
The longer the book, the more points it is worth. All of the picture books are worth 1/2 point. The short chapter books are worth 1 point, and the points go up with the length of the book.Back to Top
Why should my 3rd grader read chapter books?
It is good for students to pick the books they like, and read what they enjoy. So they may read several 1/2 points for enjoyment. To change colors and to reach their goal, however, the student must complete some chapter books in their color. Chapter books build reading comprehension and build vocabulary. On pink dot and up, a chapter book is required each three weeks to meet AR goals.Back to Top
